VOGELTOWN SCHOOL TE KURA O HUATOKI
WEEK 2, TERM 2, 2025.
FROM RYVES...
Kia ora Vogeltown whānau,
This newsletter provides important updates on:
- Government changes to education
- Professional development
- Classroom release
- Changes to reporting
- Managing teacher workload
Governmental Changes to Education
The New Zealand Curriculum has been refreshed for 2025, emphasising a structured, knowledge-rich approach. Here are the key changes:
Evidence-Based Teaching Practices: Integrates proven teaching methods to enhance learning quality.
Phases of Learning:
These replace curriculum levels.
- Phase 1 (Years 0-3): Focus on foundational literacy and maths
- Phase 2 (Years 4-6): Expanding knowledge and collaboration.
- Phase 3 (Years 7-8): Understanding the wider world and advocacy.
- Phase 4 (Years 9-10): Developing purpose, empathy, and resilience.
- Phase 5 (Years 11-13): Preparing for future pathways.
Professional Development
Teachers are undertaking significant learning, including:
- New English and Maths Curriculum
- New assessment and reporting requirements
To support this, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has allocated Teacher Only Days. While we aim to minimise disruptions, some closures are necessary - our first one is this term on Friday 30th May.
We appreciate your support as we balance teacher development with maintaining school operations.
Classroom Release and Relievers
In 2025, teachers are entitled to increased Classroom Release time (5-7 days per term) for planning, assessment, and professional learning. While this is an important part of supporting quality teaching and learning, it means students will see more release teachers in their classrooms. To provide consistency, we try to align release teachers with classes and areas of the school as much as possible.
Changes to Reporting
Due to the curriculum shift from levels to phases and changes around assessment, reporting to parents and whānau will look different and may also change between the middle and the end of the year as we gain more experience and understanding.
Written reports will be sent home at the end of Terms 2 and 4, focusing on achievements and aligning progress with the new phases of learning.
Managing teacher workload
This year brings significant change, and as principal, I am committed to ensuring our teachers feel supported. Our school prioritises staff well-being, and therefore we are taking a measured approach to implementing these changes.
We appreciate your trust, patience and support as we navigate this transition. Our children are in great hands as our team implements these changes.
Hei konā mai (goodbye for now).
CLASS REPS FOR 2025
Our incredible Class Reps are a group of ten responsible and enthusiastic Year 6 students (Room 8 - Hunter, Katie; Room 9 - Ava, William; Room 10 - Taya, Sarah V; Room 11 - Arden, Mia V; Room 12 - Willow, Sarah) who play an important leadership role at Vogeltown School.
These student leaders take on a range of duties to support both their peers and our school community. They help out on the junior side of the school during wet morning teas and lunchtimes, ensuring everyone is safe and settled indoors. They also give out iROCK tokens to acknowledge and celebrate positive behaviour in the playground. As part of their leadership development, they help to solve minor issues in the playground, role-modelling our school values of kindness and respect. This team also played a key role in designing our brand-new "Welcome to Vogeltown" certificates, which are presented to new students at our pōwhiri.
We’re also excited that the Class Reps will be attending the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) later this term – a fantastic opportunity to grow their leadership skills even further.
Ka mau te wehi, Class Reps!
PINK SHIRT DAY
Will you join the movement on Friday 16th May to spread kindness?
Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against bullying, mobilising their whole school, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.
Speak up and stand together to stop bullying by celebrating Pink Shirt Day! Come to school wearing something pink, maybe wearing everything pink, and let people know that kindness is the way forward!
INTERSCHOOL SPORTS
On Wednesday we kicked off the interschool sports season by hosting Frankley School. It was wonderful to see whānau who came along to support, as well as our tamariki who were able to watch some of the action during lunchtime.
All games were played in high spirits, with students playing hard but fair and representing their school with pride. The results were as follows:
Netball A: Vogeltown won 9-1
Netball B: Frankley won 3-2
Football: Vogeltown won 3-1
Rugby: Vogeltown won 60-12.
Big thanks to Mr Matt Goodwin for his superb organisation of the day. We are looking forward to hosting West End School next Wednesday!
OUR ROAD PATROLLERS NEED YOU!
We're on the hunt for some keen parent helpers for our pedestrian crossing!
If you have some free time on a Monday, Thursday or Friday morning to help get our kids safely across the road then please contact Laura (laura.seed@vogeltown.school.nz) or the school office.
Road patrol in the morning is from 8:15am - 9:00am and ideally, we're looking for parents and whānau who can commit to this for the term.
HOME AND SCHOOL UPDATE
Kia ora whānau
Next Wednesday 14th May we will be holding our Vogeltown Home and School Committee meeting at 6:30pm in the senior staffroom. This meeting is also our AGM where we review the past twelve months and elect officers. All are welcome.
Last term the committee approved $6,800 in donations to the school for the library and syndicate funding.
We look forward to seeing you there!

ARRIVING AT SCHOOL
We are keen to make sure that all children are safe. To help us out we ask that the earliest that children arrive at school is 8:15am. This provides time for teachers to prepare for the day, it is a time when we are sure most staff are onsite, and it is also when our road patrollers start duty for those children needing to cross the road. We appreciate your help to keep all our children safe.
