Macleans Primary School Community
Kia Ora Everyone
Macleans Primary School has been a hive of activity over the past few weeks, and we are expecting the same as we move into June with many curricula and extra-curricula activities on the horizon. You can read all about the upcoming events in this newsletter, from parent learning conferences to the Macleans Primary 2025 main fundraiser 'Value-A-Thon'.
Don't forget to see all the dates for the term at the end of this newsletter! A reminder as well to check out the school calendar link HERE. The Macleans Primary website HERE is also a great source of information.
My personal health has taken a bit of a setback recently following my knee surgery. Unfortunately I had to return to hospital on Monday this week for further work on my knee, setting back my recovery. For the next few weeks I will be at school daily in the morning, and most afternoons I will be working from home and engaged in the physiotherapy that I require to allow for a full recovery and movement in my knee. Thanks to the the Board of Trustees for their support and acknowledgement of a need for strong Hauora for all Macleans Primary staff and students.
Regards - Matthew Cooke
Principal

Limited Speed Zone Coming to Macleans Primary Soon
The Ministry of Transport has updated the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limit 2024. The updated rule requires us to introduce variable speed limits on some roads near your school before 1 July 2026. We are currently working through the priority list for new School Speed Zones (SSZ). There will be a variable SSZ and will automatically operate before and after school for a maximum of 40 minutes before or after the school bell. The variable signs will be located approximately 150m on each side of the school gate. Static signs will be placed on the roads identifying the times the variable sign is operational, if required. We will also be able to activate the sign for up to 10 minutes at any time of day when there are 50 or more students entering or leaving vehicles at the roadside - such as loading buses for school trips. At all other times the usual speed limit applies. Variable speed limit signs are either Electronic – the lower speed limit applies only when the sign is ON (lit up); or Static – the lower speed limit applies at the specified times.
Please Make Sure Your Child Has Enough Food For The Day!
A reminder to all parents to please ensure you pack enough food for your child for both morning tea and lunch. It is quite common for children to eat all their food at morning tea and then be hungry again at lunch. Please have a chat with your child to ensure that are 'spreading' their food out for the day or need more.

Property Updates
We are finalising the contractors for 2 minor works projects (less than $100K each) for the remaining MoE property money from the last round. Both of the minor works projects involve an upgrade of toilets, the outside hall toilets that have been closed for 1.5 years now and the changing rooms lighting, roof panels and toilet and basin. We are hoping to have the 2 minor works projects completed during the July School holidays. We are also finalising the details as to how we are spending the close to $600k we have in MoE property money for next round of property development. Watch this space for more details once the plans are finalised.
MoE Maths Changes From Ed. Minister Erica Stansford (A letter to Teachers)
Letter From Erica Stansford to All NZ Schools
Kia ora koutou,
I wanted to take a moment to inform you of a pre-budget announcement that I’ll be making shortly, focused on accelerating progress in mathematics education. As part of our commitment to raising achievement and supporting every learner to succeed, I will be announcing a $100 million investment in targeted maths support for children who need it most.
This investment will focus on three key areas:
A Maths Check in Years 2
We will introduce a check-in during the first two years of school to identify students who need extra support in mathematics early on. This is similar to the phonics check. This consistent nationwide data will inform decision making at future budgets about the levels of investment needed.
Tier 2 Maths Interventions
For students who are identified as needing extra support, we will fund the equivalent of 143 new full-time maths intervention teachers to provide targeted support to children in years 0-6 who are not achieving at curriculum level. This is similar in design to the successful Tier 2 Structured Literacy interventions that follow the Phonics Check.
Nationwide Rollout of the Intermediate Maths Intervention
Following the promising results of a pilot involving 3,000 intermediate-aged students—who received intensive maths support four times a week from teachers and a dedicated online tool—we will scale this programme nationwide. From 2026, it will reach around 34,000 students to boost their maths achievement to ensure they are heady for high school and NCEA.
As promised, we are shifting funding to the front line to ensure that you — our school leaders and teachers — have the tools, support, and resourcing you need in the classroom. This investment is about backing the hard work already happening in schools and responding to what you’ve consistently told us: that targeted, practical support makes a real difference.Thank you for your continued dedication to your students and to raising achievement across the country.

17th June - Science Exams
19th June - Mathematics Exams

Henry The Cat Updates
Henry is Ok!
One of our lovely neighbours popped in to give us all an update on the whereabouts of Henry. Firstly, he is ok. A local found him injured and took him to the vet. His original owners, who moved to Botany around 18 months ago, were contacted and they have collected Henry and taken him home. Our neighbour said she has spoken with his owners and said that if he doesn't settle back with them, she is happy to take him. Sadly, this means that we may not see our handsome Henry again. Our neighbour is going to keep us updated. A relief that our lovely Henry is ok but devastating that he may be gone from Macleans Primary School. We will keep you all posted as and when we get more updates.
Can For A Cazh on Friday 23 May

Hauora at Macleans Primary School: Sparklers Website (www.sparklers.org.nz)
Hauora can start with conversations with our children and reminding them that well-being is about feeling good, functioning well, and whanaungatanga (family connection/relationships). Hauora is linked to almost everything that you do and is fundamental to your overall health - affecting how well you can overcome difficulties and achieve what you want to in life. Having tools that work for parents, and using them a little and often, can support a sense of wellbeing and Hauora in our children. Check out the fantastic sparklers.org.nz for great tips, ideas and resources to support all of our Hauora.
Reporting Under-Age tobacco & Vapes: A Message from Health NZ
Selling tobacco or vape products to under 18s is llegal and puts the health of young people at risk. To help raise awareness of this issue, and to make it easier for communities to report underage sales, Health New Zealand recently launched a new reporting tool for the public: info.health/TellUs
