GMS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER MARCH 8, 2024
Happy Friday Wolf Pack Families!
I want to thank our PTSA for organizing the "Winter Wonderland Dance." It was a great event and the students had a lot of fun playing games, dancing and winning fantastic raffle prizes. We also had a great group of volunteers including several members of our teaching staff. Thanks to all of you who helped support this fun after-school event.
Next week is BUSY! Students have a half day on Tuesday, March 12. Teaching staff will be working on Professional Development in regard to teaching and learning. On Monday evening, we invite parents of current 5th graders (HWE, MBE, MHG) to attend our Parent Night beginning at 6:30pm. On Tuesday, our 6th grade vocal music students will perform at WLW. Wednesday is our 6th/7th/8th grade Orchestra Concert at GMS. Thursday evening is the monthly PTSA meeting which will be done virtually.
Spring is almost here and I am so excited about the many great activities/opportunities we have in place for our students and families. Wishing you all a fantastic weekend!
Sincerely,
Stuart Riley

Ramadan
The first day of fasting for the holy month of Ramadan will likely be Monday, March 11 or Tuesday, March 12, depending on the sighting of the new moon. Ramadan is determined by the Islamic lunar calendar, which begins with the sighting of the crescent moon. During the holy month of Ramadan, observing Muslims fast from just before the sunrise prayer, Fajr, to the sunset prayer, Maghrib. Our GMS observing Muslim students may go to the media center during their lunch period if they would prefer. For those who celebrate, we wish you a meaningful month of Ramadan.

The following Geisler students have won awards at the State level of the PTA Reflections program:

Sports Update
Girls’ Basketball and Wrestling seasons are coming to an end! This week our girls’ basketball teams competed against Muir Middle School and won. Woohoo! Both teams also competed against Smart Middle School and fought hard, but came up short. Their season has now officially ended. We are so proud of the girls and all of their hard work. This week in wrestling, the team competed at home against Smart MS and won. Yay! They will also compete in the LVC tournament on Saturday. Best of luck to all of our wrestlers. Go Wolves!

Computer Science Discovery with Maya Prep
Maya Prep is hosting a FREE after school enrichment for students who are interested in computer science, coding and web design. At the end of the sessions, students compete for CASH PRIZES in a "Hack-a-thon" for the best "technology project." These classes are taught by community members who work in the technology field. This was a huge hit with our students last year. Please see the flyer below for more information and course dates. It is important that students have reliable transportation when the class ends. Students must be pre-registered in order to attend the classes. Please see the attached flyer for registration information. First class will begin March 5.
Math-Course Skipping
Families, please see the letter below if you feel your child would benefit from skipping a math course level. The letter gives important details on the requirements and procedures for families to follow in order to be considered.
DC Trip Update
Students who needs to take medication (prescribed and over-the-counter) must have a district medication form completed. These forms were distributed this week in social studies classes and can be found here (overview information & form). Except in extenuating circumstances, the completed forms with a physician signature are due back to Mr. Yu by Monday, April 1st.
The DC Trip Spring Parent Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 17 at 6:30pm in the GMS Cafeteria. The purpose of this meeting is to go over trip expectations, packing information, review the itinerary, meet chaperones, and ask final questions. More information to come. Students will have a pre-departure meeting the day prior to the trip during school.
Please contact Mr. Yu (TorryYu@wlcsd.org) with any additional questions you may have.

Weekend Food Program-Hospitality House
Supporting and caring for our students in any way possible is our mission at GMS. Geisler MS recently partnered with Hospitality House Food Pantry in Walled Lake to bring the Weekend Food Program to our students. If you are a family that could use a little extra help with meals on the weekends, please let your child’s counselor know. Your child’s name will be held confidential. The Weekend Food Program would provide approximately 6 meals and snacks for your student on the weekend. The food would be distributed to your student in a discreet bag or backpack for them to take home each Friday. There is no cost to participate in the program. To optimize a student’s success at school starts with students having enough to eat. Please see the attached flyer for more information about the Weekend Food Program. If you are interested in having your student participate, please contact your student’s counselor Ann Marie Rutherford (Counselor for 6th Grade Students (A-L) and ALL 8th Grade Students) annmarierutherford@wlcsd.org or 248-956-2917 or Amanda Hart (6th Grade Students (M-Z) and ALL 7th Grade Students) amandahart@wlcsd.org or 248-956-2916.
