Collier Elementary
September 2023 Newsletter
Message from Mrs. Langford, Collier Principal
Good attendance matters for school success, starting as early as pre-kindergarten and throughout elementary school. By middle and high school, poor attendance is a leading indicator of dropout or not graduating from high school. Developing the habit of attendance also prepares students for success on the job and in life. Improving student attendance is an essential strategy for ensuring our students are on-track to learn and succeed.
Nationwide, as many as one out of 10 students are chronically absent, meaning they miss 10 percent or more of school days, or nearly a month. Too often, we don’t realize how quickly absences add up: Missing just two days every month can cause a child to fall behind, research shows that students who are chronically absent are not able to read at grade level. It is important to avoid unnecessary absences. Some absences are unavoidable, occasionally, children get sick and need to stay home. What is important is getting children to school every day on time.
Thank you for partnering with us in supporting your child's education and making sure they are in attendance on time each day!

OMG Gold
We are off to a great start this school year!
All students have been using math to create movement sequences tied to English Language Arts. Kindergarten has been focused on nouns and verbs; 1st grade is summarizing a book; 2nd grade is focused on geometry vocabulary words; 3rd and 4th are creating 64 count pieces of choreography; and 5th is writing their class song. They will be sharing some of these creations with their buddy classes soon.
Last week the entire school learned about and created geometric art. Some of our student artists’ work will be featured in the main hallway. In addition, each class has a print of a famous work of geometric art in their room for a month.
On September 12 and 14th, an artist from the Museum of Contemporary Art will be here to work with our students. They will be creating with watercolors.
Don’t forget to ask your students what they are learning about in OMA!
