Seeing is Believing: Understanding Data Visualization
Speaker(s): Lauren Plews, State Data Coordinator, OLIS
Virtual follow up session: Wednesday, April 5, 2017 5-6 pm
Many libraries capture data but find it difficult to report and share. In this workshop you will be introduced to best practices in effective graphical representation of quantitative information. Participants will be able to use what they have learned in their own practice but could also implement data visualization programs/instruction for their patrons and students.

Library as Innovation Lab
Speaker(s): Patrick Rashleigh, Data Visualization Coordinator, Brown U. Library; Beatrice Pulliam, Director of Technology & Information Services, Providence Public Library
While involved in digital projects for many years, Brown University Library has only recently started to construct public spaces for the express purpose of supporting patrons' engagement with technology. The first such dedicated space was the Patrick Ma Digital Scholarship Lab, completed in 2012, which feature a 16x7 foot collaborative display wall. In March 2016, the library opened its second, larger space, the Sidney E. Frank Digital Studio, which features an audio/visual recording studio and a "makerspace" with a large format 2D printer and full-color 3D printer. Rashleigh will cover some of the history and design decisions behind these spaces, an assessment of their performance so far, and some lessons and tips that the University has learned along the way.
Providence Public Library is undergoing a series of space renovations and the innovation lab will assume a significant position in the new library blueprint. Pulliam will share the library's vision of an innovation lab in the new space. She will present the efforts leading toward the final design and highlight some existing programs.

Navigating the Access to Public Records and Open Meetings Acts
Speaker(s): Lisa A. Pinsonneault, Special Assistant Attorney General, Office of Attorney General (RI)
Join your public library colleagues to learn, or review, the library’s and board’s legal responsibilities and correct procedures for adhering to the laws for public records and open meetings. After learning the guidelines, you can establish procedures for your library. Having procedures in place will make the process easier when you get requests or are challenged.
Our speaker will describe how to determine whether a document is a public record and how to respond to a citizen’s request. Important procedural provisions will be discussed, including the way to respond to public record requests and establishing guidelines for public access. Frequent trouble areas and significant legal cases will also be reviewed.
You will learn how to determine when the Open Meetings Act applies and when an executive session is appropriate. Other statutory requirements, such as posting notices, amending agendas, and maintaining minutes will be discussed. Frequent trouble areas and significant legal cases will also be reviewed.
Lisa A. Pinsonneault is a Special Assistant Attorney General who joined the Department of Attorney General, Civil Division, in January 2011. Since then, Lisa has been focused on general litigation and open government matters. She graduated from Roger Williams University School of Law in 1998.
