WATER BOTTLES
Please remember to send your child with a water bottle to school daily! Children fill their water bottles multiple times a day at our Water Filling Stations, so it is super important to send in a labeled refillable water bottle daily for when your child gets thirsty during the day.

Any documentation for your child’s absence (i.e. doctor’s note, court note, etc.)
If your child is well enough to complete their assignments at home, please share that information with your child’s teacher so they can send you assignments that your child can complete while absent.

Valentines Day Celebrations
VALENTINE'S DAY - February 12th
VALENTINE'S DAY WILL BE CELEBRATED ON FEBRUARY 12TH AT CONNORS
FRIENDSHIP BEARS
We are going to have our Valentine's Day FRIENDSHIP BEAR Exchange to celebrate how much we all CARE for each other! Each student will be able to give and receive a Friendship Bear with a caring card with one of their classmates. Thank you so much to our Connors PTO for sponsoring this activity! Due to the generousity of our Connors PTO, all students will have something to give each other and all students will receive something.
NO TREATS
No food, candy, treats or goody bags may be sent to school by any families (this includes food to be shared in class or sent home in backpacks). We have many severe food allergies at school and during school wide holiday celebrations, the candy and treats can become too much to keep track of. Thank you for understanding as we protect our little ones.
VALENTINE'S DAY CARDS/GIFT BAGS
It is completely optional if you would like to send in Valentine's Day cards or other non-food items such as pencils, stickers, games, prizes, etc., but if you choose to send these in, please make sure that you send in enough for the whole class or whole grade. Your child's homeroom teacher can provide a list of names for you.
KINDNESS ALERT
If you send in any Valentine's Day Cards or prizes, you must send in enough for the WHOLE CLASS. If you would like to give a card /gift to students in other homerooms, you would need to send in enough cards/gifts for the ENTIRE GRADE. Students may NOT pick out individual students to give to or only give to their "FRIENDS". This is very important. Please imagine how it would feel if some students in a class received a card/gift, but not others. If you do not want to purchase enough for the class or grade, please do not send those items to school. Parents are not required to send in Valentine's Day cards/gifts, as all students give a gift/card to each other via a Friendship Bear Exchange, paid for by the Connors PTO. Sending in Valentine's Day Cards/Gifts are completely optional and not necessary.
DRESS UP
Students are welcome to dress up in Red or in Valentine's Day Themed clothing.

Students may also dress up in 100th Day of School themed clothing. We look forward to this memorable celebration of learning! Feel free to contact your child's teacher with any questions.
As a friendly reminder, February 13th is also a 1:00 pm dismissal. There is no PTL on Febuary 13th.
Pizza with the Principal
Yummy Pizza, Minute to Win It Games, Fun Conversations and Story Time
This week was the second week of "Pizza with the Principal"! This program provides an opportunity for me to connect with our students on a more personal level and build strong relationships with each and every one of them. During Pizza with the Principal, we gather together and enjoy delicious pizza or lunch brought from home, read captivating stories, and/or engaged in fun games and activities. Pizza with the Principal started this past week with homeroom classes 203, 104, 206, 309, and 306! Next week homerooms 107 and 302 will have Pizza with the Principal! There is no charge for Pizza with the Principal. If children bring their home lunch, they can enjoy their home lunch only or both pizza and home lunch. For any of the students who don't like pizza, they can choose to get the lunch offered in the cafeteria as well. If a student is absent, they can come on a different day. If a parent ordered lunch from the cafeteria as they normally would on the lunch google form, but their child participated in Pizza with the Principal, parents will not be charged for school lunch. It is very flexible! If your child is not able to eat pizza, please email Nurse Kristen kmarotta@hoboken.k12.nj.us

Connors Class Learning Activities
Kindergarten
Ms. Bartolotti, Ms. Fernandez, Ms. Fleischer, Ms. Criqui, Ms. Klag
ELA: This week, our essential question was, "What do living things need to grow?" We focused on the letter Hh, with a phonics emphasis on the sound /h/. Our sight word of the week was my. The students engaged with the realistic fiction story, My Garden, identifying the story elements and illustrating an important event from the narrative. Additionally, our Kindergarteners enjoyed reading Hop Can Hop! We are amazed by our KOALAfied Kindergarteners and their dedication during center activities. We look forward to another wonderful week of learning ahead!
Social Studies: This week in Social Studies, in honor of the Great Kindness Challenge, we explored many ways to show kindness. We discussed how we can be kind at school, in our community, at home, and even to our planet. The children shared wonderful ideas! We read stories about kindness, recited a kindness pledge, and expressed our ideas through writing and drawing. Our kindergarteners learned that kindness matters all the time—even when no one is watching! We also learned about Lunar New Year, which marks the start of the Year of the Snake. We talked about traditions like dragon and lion dances, red envelopes for good luck, and special foods families enjoy during the celebration. The children were excited to see how different cultures celebrate new beginnings.
1st Grade
Ms. Vayda, Ms. Severino, Ms. Sheridan
ELA: This week our essential question was "What was life like long ago?" We began the week by listening and reading books that taught us about school and homes long ago. Our main focus was compare and contrast. Students used Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast life long ago and today. We also practiced comparing simple things such as dogs and cats. Our phonics skill this week was long u_e, o_e, and e_e. Our red words for the week were: ago, boy, girl, people, how, and old. We learned when to use verbs, are and is correctly in a sentence. Another focus this week was on rereading. This is very important to practice, so students apply this when taking their weekly reading assessments. We began our new unit in writing. This unit will focus on expository/informative writing. Students will be writing All About Books. This week they picked a topic to focus on. Then they researched and organized all the facts that they know. Next week we will begin our introductions that will include a hook, naming the topic, and listing 3 subtopics.
Social Studies: We learned the difference between producers and consumers as we participated in activities listing the things we consume and where they are made. We discussed that people work to make money and get the things they need. Lasty, we learned fact and opinion.
Dual Language: This week during Spanish, our essential question was "¿Cómo era la vida antes y cómo es ahora?" (life then and now). We practiced comparing and contrasting different things such as schools, house work, transportation and games. Our phonics focus were the letters that make the /k/ sound: letters c, q, and k. We learned that if we want a syllable to make the /k/ sound with all the vowels, it should be written like this: ca, que, qui, co, cu. Since the letter c when followed by the vowels /e/ and /i/ make the /s/ sound, just in English! And the letter /q/ is always accompanied by the letter /u/, which is silent.
2nd Grade
Ms. Rinaldi, Ms. Celentano, Ms. Garcia
Math: This week in math we continued using standard notation to represent addition and subtraction situations. We also learned a new game called Collect $1. It is an extension of a game we learned in Unit 1. We were able to review coin values and equivalencies this week as well as telling time.
ELA: This week our second graders worked on learning about main story elements while reading the realistic fiction story, "Happy New Year". The essential question for this text set was, " how are kids around the world different?" While reading, students learned how to identify the setting of the story as well as comparing and contrasting. The phonics skill this week was silent letters: wr, kn, gn, mb, sc. The vocabulary skill was figurative language: similes. They worked on their Friday Craftivity where they made a lantern that went along with the story "Happy New Year". They had to compare and contrast celebrations from how the United States celebrates the new year and how China celebrates the new year.
Social Studies: This week in Social Studies, we had a lot to celebrate! We began with Holocaust Remembrance Day, reflecting on what makes each of us unique and taking time to celebrate our individuality in the classroom. We also focused on kindness throughout the week, engaging in meaningful discussions about what kindness looks like and how we can show it in various situations. Many students participated in the "Great Kindness Challenge," spreading kindness across different settings and committing to continue these acts every day. Finally, we celebrated the Lunar New Year by exploring the customs and traditions associated with this joyful holiday!
Magical Moments: On Thursday, we had our Bullying Prevention Laser Light Show School Assembly. We learned how to say the following words in sign language: respect, inspire, grow, help, & trust. We also learned how to sign the phrase "Do the right thing!". We had such a blast!
3rd Grade
Ms. Hall, Ms. Schmidt
Math: This week third graders started a new unit of math, further exploring multiplication & division connections and conceptions! Students learned how to apply their knowledge of parentheses to problems involving the order of operations. We encourage all third graders to continue to practice their multiplication fact fluency at home to help them in our future explorations & expansions of multiplication!
ELA: This week, the third graders celebrated all their writing growth by participating in their second Writer's Cafe! The students shared their final Literary Analysis essays and provided each other with positive feedback while enjoying donuts and juice. Additionally, the students continued reading our core novel, Who Was Coretta Scott King?, and specifically focused on inferring and analyzing character feelings by finding both direct and indirect evidence in various texts. They were so excited to complete our third core novel and show all they have learned on our unit test!
Social Studies: This week third graders wrapped up their second unit of social studies: A Case Study of New Jersey’s Government! Students furthered their discussion of the rights and responsibilities of citizens, making connections to activism that we have learned about in our precious ELA core novel studies.
Third Grade Thrills: On Monday, third graders celebrated the culmination of our second writing unit: Literary Analysis Tasks! In celebration of our progress and growth, we had a writer's celebration. Thank you to the third grade families for donating yummy treats for students to enjoy while they shared their essays. Third graders, we are so proud of your wonderful writing!
4th Grade
Ms. Schulz, Mrs. Rodriguez, Ms. Stubbe
Math: 4th Grade Mathematicians continued their study in Investigations, Unit 6 Fractions & Decimals. Students continued to explore equivalent fractions working with fraction tiles and applying the mathematical strategy of solving problems. Students were introduced to decimal notation and representation in order to identify tenths and hundredths.
ELA: Phenomenal 4th Graders had a busy week during the ELA block, including the Bullying Prevention Assembly and the Theater Showcase. In addition, students began Unit 3 "That's the Spirit!" with the core text "What Would She Do?" by Kay Woodward. This book includes short biographies of twenty-five trailblazing women - this week focused on Cleopatra, The Trung Sisters, Murasaki Shikibu, and Joan of Arc. Students also continued the writing unit by drafting a Literary Analysis essay about character traits exhibited by Mae Jemison and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Social Studies: 4th graders worked on learning more about exploration of the Americas. They studied the comic and timeline at the beginning of the chapter to better understand what we will continue learning about. They have been working hard on improving their textbook reading skills to help them understand the content better. They related exploration to what it was like or what it would be like to move somewhere brand new in their own lives. They also studied their new vocabulary words for this chapter. Keep up the great work 4th graders!
5th Grade
Ms. Yoo, Ms. Schultes, Ms. Ortiz, Ms. Arciero
Math: This week, students had the opportunity to work on multi-part real-world word problems involving multiplication and division. We continued focusing on understanding what is being asked, as the wording of a question can lead to different answers.
Students also engaged in math activities to review for their Unit 4 Test. They either worked in small groups with their teacher on real-world multi-step word problems or participated in a multiplication and division carousel, allowing them to practice these skills in various contexts.
ELA: This week 5th graders focused on summarizing and compare and contrast within their novels and reading wonders text. In Chasing Lincoln’s Killer, we are getting closer and closer to the exciting conclusion. 5th graders also worked on practicing their RST for writing. Keep it up!
Social Studies: This week in Social Studies, students explored how regional disparities played a key role in deepening divisions across the country. We also delved into the life and legacy of John Brown, examining his impact on the fight against slavery and his lasting influence on American history.
POR: This week, the 5th-grade students continued reading "Chasing Lincoln's Killer" and focused on text structures. They learned how non-fiction authors organize their work in various ways to convey new information, specifically looking at chronological order, problem-solution, compare and contrast, and detailed descriptions.
In math, we've been advancing in our unit on multiplication and long division with large numbers. We will be concluding this unit next week, so please encourage students to practice the standard algorithm for both multiplication and long division over the weekend to prepare for next week's Unit 4 Math Test.
Lastly, we were delighted to have a visit from Rosie, who seemed to thoroughly enjoy our daily Math class!
Science
Kindergarten: This week in science class, kindergarteners wrapped up their group design projects which will be presented to the Connors School community on Wednesday February 19th 2025. Students designed and built toys which can move by pushing or pulling it as a follow up to a previous unit on force and motion.
Classes also began a new PLTW unit titled, Animal Adaptations. This exciting unit will teach students about computer coding and digital animations. Students will design a program which depicts an animal in its habitat and will also include the basic needs of that animal including its form of shelter as well as what the animal eats.
1st Grade: This week in science class, first graders wrapped up their group design projects which will be presented to the Connors School community on Wednesday February 19th 2025. Students designed and built toys which can make sound through vibration.
Classes also began a new PLTW unit titled, Animals & Algorithms. This exciting unit will teach students about computer coding and digital animations.
2nd Grade: The 2nd grade is wrapping up where they left off completing grids and games.
3rd Grade: In Science our 3rd graders prepared for ROUND 2 of the STEAM TANK Challenge this week. This initiative aims to inspire New Jersey’s public school students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math.
The students have dedicated months to researching their chosen products, focusing on modifying them to create eco-friendly alternatives. Their hard work will be showcased at the upcoming STEM expo next month, and I couldn't be prouder of their efforts.
4th Grade: 4th grade has been engaged in preparing their slides and brainstorming questions and hypotheses for their different projects and are now in the process of refining their slides and creating short videos as part of the project requirements.
5th Grade: Our 5th Grade Scientists at Connors performed a simulation of a space mission that included landing a rover on the surface of Mars. Students analyzed rocks, soil samples and air in an attempt to find life on another planet, all while keeping their crew safe and healthy. The students were focused and determined to complete their individual team tasks that combined to make a successful mission. This field trip was part of HPSD Year of Science initiative funded by The Hoboken Public Education Foundation.
The future is bright for our soon to graduate elementary school Koalas!

Future Environmentalists are now entering an introduction stage of getting familiar with the TED talks and picking a topic that they will be working on and presenting in the upcoming months. They will be using a Student Led Packet to brainstorm ideas, slideshow and a script to put together the final presentation to present it to the classmates.
P.E. with Mr. Favino
This week in PE we continued working in our lacrosse unit. Students in grades 3-5 took a big step and started throwing with regular lacrosse sticks instead of scoops, and had the goal of catching 5 throws from a teammate. This is definitely one of the more challenging skills we work on throughout the year, but students progressed extremely well and it looks like I’ll need to start recruiting some future players for our Hoboken High lacrosse team! Students in grades K-2 focused on the skill of scooping ground balls, first starting with a raking technique and progressing to a regular ground ball scoop. We finished the week practicing the skill with the game “clean your yard” where students tried to scoop different gym equipment and competed to see who could collect the most.
Music with Mr. Azzarto
Hello Connors families,
During the week of January 27th, our Connors Band students were busy learning some new songs.
The 4th grade band has now been playing their instruments for five months and they have really come so far in such a short period of time. From three notes to many more, the new songs sound amazing! Here is Stella, Sophia, and Serafina getting ready to rock the house with their new songs!
Mandarin with Ms. Ni
This week in Mandarin we kicked off the Year of the Snake with traditional paper cutting and lanterns. We also learned about the different customs and exciting things to do during this 15 day celebration.
