February 25 Newsletter

February
Dear Families,
We are a week into semester 2, and have completed winter testing. We are seeing some fantastic growth! We are working very hard to ensure we are meeting the needs of all of our students so they can get the education they deserve.
Here are a few ways you can help!
- Please see that your child gets enough rest at night. Make sure they do not have access to screens or devices in their rooms, which are sleep disruptors. Typically, if you have to wake your child in the morning, it means they did not get enough sleep.
- Get your child to school and on time every day. Instruction begins right after the bell rings, and goes to the final bell at the end of the day. We do a lot of hands-on activities and discussion that cannot be made-up. However, if your child is truly sick (see the graphic later in this newsletter), please keep them home.
- Read, read, read! Read to your child or have them read to you or a sibling. The more they practice, the stronger reader they will become.
- Instead of giving younger children screens in the car, have them count telephone poles, train cars, or the number of gray or blue or red cars. Or if at a restaurant, do some simple math with the sugar packets/coffee creamers that are on the table.
- Cook with your kids! Learning fractions is much easier when cooking or baking and actually getting to see the fractions in the form of measuring cups and spoons.
Thank you for partnering with us in your child's education. We are glad you entrust us with your most precious possession...your children.

Counselor Corner
Is it Bullying?
From the Counselor’s Desk
Every child at Lakeview Terrace Elementary have 4 Bullying Prevention lessons that teach that bullying is
Mean
Happens on purpose
Keeps happening (more than 1 or 2 times)
Won’t stop even when the victim has said to stop
Unfair
One-sided (only one person or group of people is being mean)
All of the above items are present in bullying, but not in a conflict.
Conflict is when students
Disagree
Argue
Are being mean to each other
Often don’t want to work together to solve a problem
We’re working on recognizing, refusing, reporting, learning to take responsibility when they know when mean behavior is happening, growing empathy skills, and how to be an upstander.
How can you help?
Go over these items with your children and talk about the conflicts between siblings, helping them to identify their own behaviors and take responsibility for their actions.
It is a joy and privilege to work with your child
If you have questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Ebel at 766-2653, ext. 1391

Levy information
Please take a few minutes to learn the facts about the levy if you have not already. Below is a levy presentation by our superintendent, Carol Lewis. The second one is in Spanish. The link below that takes you to an FAQ section, a more clear look at some of the graphics, as well as the proposed "add backs" if the levy passes, and cuts if it doesn't. Thank you.
Valentine's Day
We also have early release on February 14. Students will be released at noon to get an early start on the 3-day weekend with President's Day and no school on Monday, February 17.
A quick reminder that we do not accept deliveries on Valentine's Day. We do not allow flowers or balloons into the classrooms due to allergies, and they may not be transported on the bus. Please save these expressions of your love for home.
Finally, please remember, if you are bringing treats for a classroom party, all items must be store-bought and have the original ingredient list on the package. We cannot allow any items with nut products to be distributed. We have other allergies to be aware of, as well. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Safety and Security Information
Recently, I have had questions about safety and security on our campus. Here are some things you might want to know.
- All exterior doors are closed and locked at all times, with the exception of one door during a very specific, and short duration of time. That door is monitored.
- Students have been trained to not open doors for people that are not students in their class or adults who work on campus.
- We ask parents and visitors to come to the window instead of coming inside so we can keep our front door locked. This also limits access to the main part of the building.
- All visitors to campus must check in at the office. If our staff sees anyone who doesn't belong on campus, they will ask for their visitor badge and/or direct them to the office.
- Anyone moving beyond the office area or the cafeteria, must have passed a current Washington State Patrol background check. This includes people going into classrooms, working as volunteers, or going onto the playground.
- We hold one safety drill per month, alternating between fire, lockdown, secure the building, earthquake, and others.
If you have any questions about our security plan or drills, please reach out to Mrs. Bateman. Thank you.
Safety, continued.
- Turn right into parent pick-up from Lark.
- If walking to pick up, please use the crosswalks and not just cross wherever. Also, please DO NOT encourage your child to dart out into the road to cross.
- Please do not block the driveways of our neighbors.
- The main parking lot by the office and along Clover are not part of our parent pick-up, except in special circumstances.
- Obey school zone speed limit
- Respect the crossing guards by following their signals and their requests
- Do not stop in the middle of the road to allow your child to enter your vehicle
Also, when dropping off students in the morning, please do not let children off along Lark, especially if the gate is closed. There is no adult supervision along Lark or on the playground until the gate is open.
School Meals
Please use the app Nutrislice to stay informed about the school meal menus. Just download the app to your smartphone or click the nutrislice logo to go to the website!
School lunch survey
Our food service department is seeking feedback from parents about our school food program. Please use the link below to answer a few questions about our food service. Our kids' tummies thank you!
Attendance Information
Our goal for attendance this year is 95%. That is 95% of students present each day, and each student to be here 95% of the year. We understand kids get sick and emergencies happen. However, we know that students learn better and achieve at higher levels when they are at school, and on time, daily, starting in kindergarten.
Of course if your child is legitimately sick, please keep them home. The chart below will help you determine when to keep them home.
If your child needs to be gone, please make sure you call the office as early as possible, preferably before 9:00 AM. If you know in advance that your child will be gone, we ask that you complete a pre-arranged absence form.
Our attendance line is 509-766-2653 and press 5.
Thank you!
