CSMA Adviser Update

We are finishing the printing and sorting and packaging of nearly 1,700 award certificates, so we appreciate your patience. We will post the complete spreadsheet of winners, sorted by school medium, on Monday, and we are working with BNC to gather and package all the winning entries to add to our website. You will be able to see the actual PDFs and links entered in the contest, and use those as teaching examples and inspiration.

Our summer critique service is included in CSMA membership dues, and we hope all our members will participate. You can read all the details here.

The CSMA board voted to add "hybrid news media" to our family of critiques, and the judging rubrics are still being developed. The goal is to have them ready to distribute by early May, and they will be publicized through this e-newsletter, the CSMA listserv, and social media.

This means that some advisers will need to decide between a Print News Publication "only" critique and a Hybrid News Media critique. A choice will need to be made. We still offer our Online Media critique (websites and social media), along with Video Media and Yearbook.

All entries must be postmarked or submitted through our online entry forms NLT June 4.

The Summer Adviser Workshop (SAW) and reTHINK (focused on student news teams) will again be offered concurrently at Rock Canyon HS in Highlands Ranch. These three-day workshops run June 5-7 and you can get more information on our site. Information on SAW, led by Adam Dawkins and a team of experienced advisers, can be found here, including the online registration link.

Did you know that national journalism certification can help you qualify for CTE status?

The Journalism Education Association offers two levels of professional certification, the Certified Journalism Educator (CJE) and the Master Journalism Educator (MJE). JEA offers testing at national conventions, and CSMA has sponsored local testing when there is demand.

You can find all sorts of information on how to apply for certification, study guides for the tests, and other FAQs here.

Two quick things to know:

1. The cost to take the CJE exam is $60, and the MJE exam is $85. CSMA will reimburse you the cost of either test! All you need to do is contact Jack Kennedy with the news that you have passed a test and a check will be coming your way!
2. Jack Kennedy, MJE, can proctor either test locally, and he would simply like to be efficient, bringing three or more test takers together on one day. Interested in taking either the CJE or the MJE this spring? Contact jpkjournalism@gmail.com.

We are tentatively planning for a testing date in Highlands Ranch on the best date from June 10-13. If you have a preference, please contact Jack Kennedy with your preferred date, and for any other details..

You can always test at a convention, of course, but you definitely need to plan ahead.
