KILLAM PUBLIC SCHOOL

Treaty Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that Killam Public School is on Treaty 6 territory - the ancestral and traditional land of many Indigenous groups. We are grateful for the animals, the water and the forests that provide us with many resources we use each day. We are thankful for the diverse opportunities that this land offers. We respect the land in which we gather on today.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has helped to support our students and our school this year!
Our School Council has been a huge support this year! Some of the things they bought for our students were 21 Chromebooks (about $8000), paying for a new logo on the gym floor ($3000), subsidizing costs for all of our students to go swimming, skiing, skating, bowling and curling, and $250 for each grade to go towards bussing for field trips. Thank you!
Hope Mission has dropped of lunches twice a week which were available for free for any student who either did not have a lunch or had forgotten it that day.
Flagstaff Family Community Services and their financial support to bring both Motivational Magic and Jo Media to KPS.
Flowers and Vegetables
Thank you to the Lougheed Pop Up Greenhouse and the Lougheed Museum for donating all the flowers and vegetables in our planter boxes outside the school. They are beautiful! If you get a chance, the Lougheed Museum is open Monday - Friday, 9:00 - 4:00, and is a great place to spend a few hours on a summer day!
Trees
We have four beautiful beds of trees planed along the south fence of the playground. Thank you to Mrs. Borgel for picking out trees at the Tree Corral and getting them planted. Thank you to Les Fee for rototilling the ground to get it ready to plant. Thank you to the Town of Killam for helping us keep them watered all summer!
National Travel Trip
Our Junior High Travel Club is in the early stages of planning a trip to Montreal, Quebec City, and Ottawa during Spring Break 2025! The dates for the trip are March 22-28, 2025. This trip is open to students currently in Grades 6-8. If you would like more information about the trip or are interested in registering your child, please contact Ms. Nielsen at cnielsen@brsd.ab.ca.
New Restrictions on the use of Personal Mobile Devices
On June 17, the Honourable Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education, announced restrictions on the use of personal mobile devices and access to social media platforms in Alberta Kindergarten to Grade 12 schools and private Early Childhood Services programs, starting September 1, 2024. These restrictions are aimed at helping to reduce distractions and maximize learning time, while supporting student mental health and reducing opportunities for cyberbullying. A personal device is considered to be any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate with or access the internet, such as a cellphone, tablet, laptop, or smartwatch.
The attached letter outlines the reasons this policy was introduced, some details on what schools are being asked to do, and some general information on what parents can expect in the coming months.
