LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
Today, I'm writing about the professional development we engaged in as a staff last Friday, March 15. Our facilitator was Tovah Denaro from Innovative Behavioral Consulting LLC. Tovah is an educational and behavioral consultant who has been working with us this year on Mastery Based Learning, Universal Design for Learning, and Restorative Classroom Management. We appreciate ALIGN for funding six days for Tovah to work with our instructional staff this year.
Friday's main topic was Restorative Classroom Management Practices. We learned about brain development, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and 5 research based myths and corresponding truths about student behavior. We discussed our real-life classroom management dilemmas, how to avoid getting in power struggles with kids, the link between teacher burnout and students behavior, and how to develop a strong restorative system schoolwide.
This topic is super relevant in all schools, and it's so important for staff to have time to discuss successes, struggles, beliefs, and solutions. When we have a whole day, we can take more time to share, listen, and learn from our facilitator and from one another. The LISD staff was engaged in this day of professional development, and we are committed to creating schoolwide systems and structures that support students with classroom management practices that are trauma informed, culturally responsive, and restorative. It's a tall order and it means that we have to work hard at interrupting some of our default reactions to student behavior.
I'll leave you with this pearl of wisdom, which is relevant for both parents and school staff...really all adults who have ever found themselves in a power struggle with a child or teenager Kendra Lewis, our wonderful kindergarten teacher, said that someone once told her, "Watch that train go by, but do not get on it!"
Enjoy your weekend. I hope to see you at the talent show on Saturday night.
All my best,
Martha

From the artist: I paint self portraits. My use of a limited color pallet, odd sized hand stretched canvases, iconography and expression conveys a multifaceted story. The work showcases my own questioning and understanding of my coming of age. Frida Kahlo’s expressive femininity and the perfection of renaissance paintings are my inspirations.

Highlighting Our Awesome Elementary Music Program
Elementary music is focused on singing and movement, developing foundational skills that will support students in music-making throughout their lives. Kindergarteners love the song “When Dogs Get Up in the Morning” where they have a chance to come up with an animal and the sound that it makes. The first, second, and third graders are learning a circle dance to the fiddle tune “Red Wing” and building their steady tempo skills. In fourth and fifth grade, we are developing our singing voices in choir, and decoding rhythmic notation. Sixth graders have been playing recorders and learning to read music, preparing them to take on band instruments when they reach middle school. The sixth grade is also working to put on a musical this year! They are busy learning songs and lines, and preparing sets, props, and costumes.

What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in? I was involved with the advanced drama class and we have had some performances.
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever? When I was in elementary school, I spent time sitting on a big log by the pond just watching all the insects and creatures moving. I really enjoyed that.
What is the best piece of advice you have received from a teacher? Mr. Tetu encouraged me to think for myself and not compare myself to others.
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….” I cannot live without my family because they inspire me to be who I am.
What is the most creative excuse you have ever used to get out of school work? I don’t make excuses. I just get my work done at school.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students. Don’t procrastinate! Just get your work done at school or at home. Otherwise it weighs on you when you’re trying to enjoy your weekend.
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher? I like all the assignments in Isaac Berg’s Mythology class, so I don’t have one favorite. That class inspires me to be more creative.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why? To me, the most important quality is to be able to share your interests, because it’s nice when you can listen to each other.
In 10 years, I will be… A computer coder…and I’ll be renting a house, probably on Lopez.
Who/what do you find inspiring? My cousin, Tristan, because he was able to get a drivers license, a car, AND rent a house.
What song summarizes your feelings about graduating from high school? Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John because we are leaving behind something that we are so used to.
What are your plans after high school? For right now, I don’t know for sure, but I am considering going to a two-year tech school.
Is there anything else you want people to know about you? I like to walk around the village because it brings me joy. I do it every single day that I don’t have school, even if it is raining or snowing.
