- Pass the fortune teller to the next oldest player and repeat
- We will play for 10 minutes as a warm up for our critique
BASIC GUIDELINES FOR CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIQUE
Art is a visual language, and like any other form of communication, it consists of two parts - the Intention, and the Perception.
Art can elicit definite emotional responses in the viewer. The process of critique allows the artist to determine whether their 'intended message' is the same as the 'perceived message' (which is what the viewer feels when they observe the artwork).
When doing a critique of someone else's work, it's important to do it in a constructive manner. It isn't necessary to comment on the entire painting ... sometimes it can be far more helpful to zero in on one element which is working well, then pick one element which could benefit from a different approach.
Instructions For 1234 Critique
- Students will move around the room in a clockwise manner, silently.
- You will choose 4 different works of art to critique and add your comments to the "comment cards"
- There can be no more than 4 comments per artwork
- If you give a complement, you have to give an area of improvement as well (and vice versa)
- You must also ask a question about the artwork to at least 2 different artists
- Once you have completed your tasks, pick up a word search from the center of the room and wait for your classmates to finish...SILENTLY...
RECEIVING CRITICISM OF OUR WORK
Since we all have different backgrounds and experiences when it comes to art, no two critics/artists will give the same opinion of a particular piece of art. Most importantly, we need to remember that the critique is of the artwork, and not the artist. It's not personal.
The person on the receiving end of a critique has the choice of whether they decide to make use of any suggestions being offered during a critique. The suggestions and comments will be absorbed, and will likely come into play at a later time, with a different work of art. This is a process that should help us become better artists and learn to evaluate our own opinions as well.
