Walsh Community Update
February 2025
Winter Message from Mrs. Urban
Dear Walsh Families,
February is here, and we are excited about all the wonderful things happening at Walsh School! This month brings many opportunities for learning, growth, and fun, and we love seeing our students embrace every experience with enthusiasm.
Our students continue to demonstrate PRIDE every day—being Prepared, Responsible, In control and safe, Doing their best, and Earning and giving respect. We are so proud of their efforts and the positive impact they are making in our school community!
This month, we are looking forward to:
Celebrating kindness and friendship with Valentine’s Day activities
Engaging in new learning experiences with our curriculum
Recognizing student achievements and milestones
Encouraging students to earn and redeem rewards at the Walsh Pet Shop
Thank you for your ongoing support in making Walsh a great place for our students to learn and grow. We appreciate our partnership with families and look forward to an amazing month ahead.
As always, if you have any questions or need anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Mrs. Megan Urban
Principal, Walsh School
Winter FastBridge Benchmarking
On February 7th your child’s results from the FastBridge Learning Benchmark test for the FAST Track assessment which is earlyMath and earlyReading will be sent. We administer FastBridge tests to determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year, in the areas of reading and math. The reading and math tests are given each fall, winter, and spring. These tests are a brief snapshot of skills in addition to their classroom performance, which can help a teacher make decisions on any needed academic supports.
The report shows your child’s reading and math scores from this Winter (January) testing session. Students’ scores are classified in categories from Low Risk to High Risk. Your child’s scores are displayed as blue dots on the continuous line. There are a variety of factors that influence student achievement, and no single test is able to measure all of those factors. However, we will use these scores to help identify areas of academic strength, as well as areas that we can improve as a building and as a school district. These scores will be monitored to ensure that they continue to make progress.
Your child’s FastBridge report also has measures that explain how they compare to other same grade students in the district and the larger national sample of students.
Please go to https://www.renaissance.com/products/fastbridge/ to learn more about this screening. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or our school psychologist, Mrs. Claire Ruff.
We appreciate your support!
Random Acts of Kindness
Walsh School is excited to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week from February 10th through February 14th! Kindness has the power to make a lasting impact on our school, community, and beyond.
This year, we’re challenging all students and staff to take part in our Kindness Challenge—a fun and meaningful way to spread kindness at Walsh, throughout our local community!
As part of this initiative, our Walsh students have also designed special Kindness Bookmarks, which have been shared with local nursing homes and schools to brighten someone’s day.
Let’s work together to make kindness contagious!
Introducing Spirit Sticks at Walsh School
We are excited to introduce Spirit Sticks as a fun and meaningful way to celebrate and encourage our students at Walsh School!
Spirit Sticks are small, collectible tags that students can proudly display on a ring attached to their backpacks. These will be given out for various achievements, special events, and positive behaviors that align with our PRIDE values:
--Prepared to learn
--Responsible
--In control and safe
--Do their best
--Earn and give respect
Students will have the opportunity to earn Spirit Sticks throughout the year as they demonstrate these qualities and take part in special school celebrations. Our first Spirit Stick was given out on January 31st to show our grade level pride. We can’t wait to see our Bulldogs collect and display their Spirit Sticks with PRIDE!
Global Day of Play
We are excited to celebrate Global Day of Play on Wednesday, February 5th! This is an amazing opportunity that we’ve committed to participate in with Reed School, highlighting the importance of unstructured play in fostering creativity, problem-solving, and social skills.
To learn more about Global Day of Play, please click here. It is an incredible opportunity, especially for our little ones!
Each teacher has the flexibility to shape this day in a way that best fits their classroom, so you can expect more details from your child’s teacher soon. Some may invite students to bring a board game, puzzle, or favorite toy (no electronics, please!) from home.
Play is an essential part of learning, and we can’t wait to see our Bulldogs engage, explore, and have fun together!
100th Day of School
Wednesday, February 5th marks the 100th day of school, and we’re excited to celebrate this special milestone with our students!
To join in the fun, we invite students to:
--Dress like they are 100 years old – Think glasses, suspenders, gray hair, or anything that makes them look like a centenarian!
--Wear clothing that displays 100 items – This could be stickers, buttons, pom-poms, or anything creative that represents 100!
As part of the celebration, each student will receive a special 100th Day of School Spirit Stick to mark this exciting achievement!
We can't wait to see all the creative outfits and celebrate our Bulldogs' hard work and growth over the past 100 days!
