Solar Eclipse: April 8, 2024
Given the unpredictable nature of the eclipse’s impact on our region, Champlain Valley superintendents have chosen to prioritize the safety and well-being of students and staff and mutually agreed to close schools on April 8, 2024.
For more information on Vermont’s planning for the total solar eclipse, please visit vermont.gov/eclipse.
Eclipse Glasses for Every Student
Earlier this year, CVSD purchased solar eclipse glasses for each student and were sent home last week. Be sure to check your student(s) backpack for their pair.
Recycle Your Eclipse Glasses at School!
Please send your eclipse glasses in with your student to put in the collection boxes located at ABS and WCS! CSWD has partnered with Astronomers Without Borders to collect solar eclipse glasses to be diverted from the landfill and reused. These glasses will then be redistributed to communities who might not otherwise have a safe way to view the solar eclipse. Our schools are acting as collection sites for our community. The collection boxes will be in the front office/lobby of each school until April 17.
WCS Theatre Presents:
THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, features an original story and it's every father's nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met.
Health Office Update
Increase in Measles Cases in US
The CDC has issued a Health Alert to raise awareness of an increase in U.S. and international measles cases. From January 1 to March 28, 2024, the CDC has been notified of 97 confirmed U.S. cases of measles.. This includes seven outbreaks (defined as three or more related cases); 72% of cases are outbreak-associated. In addition, the Canadian province of Quebec has reported 30 cases so far in 2024, primarily in Montreal and surrounding suburbs. Most domestic cases reported in 2024 have been among unvaccinated children ages 12 months and older who were exposed to measles virus while traveling internationally.
How contagious is measles?
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. In fact, 9 out of 10 people exposed to measles will catch it, too, if they are unvaccinated, have not had the disease before or have a problem with their immune system. Even very brief exposure to an infected person in a shared space poses a high risk for unimmunized people.
How long is someone with measles contagious?
People with measles are contagious before they know they are sick. An infected person can spread measles easily to others 4 days before the rash appears, and they are still contagious 4 days after the rash appears.

Special Education Parent Advisory Council
Hello Parents, Caregivers, and Friends of Children with special needs,
My name is Erin Bingham. I am the mother of 2 at HCS - a second grader and a preschooler. My youngest has a rare genetic condition, Williams Syndrome. I am interested in both creating a network of individuals who care for kids with special needs that can serve as a support and working together to establish a Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) that would serve the entire district. SEPACs advocate for the interests of any child with any kind of special need at school. Although there is a commitment from CVSD administration, this is the first step in a long process to gauge interest and commitment, but there is no timeline yet.
If you are interested at any level in either connecting with others who support kids with special needs, or in understanding more about what would be necessary to start a SEPAC, please email me at bingham.erin@gmail.com.
Warmly,
Erin
