Avon Local Schools March 2024
March 2024

Superintendent's message
Spring is in the air! It’s almost the end of the Third Quarter and Spring Break is just a few weeks away. The Class of 2024 is also preparing for their senior trip to Washington, DC later this month.
We’ve had so much to celebrate in our schools this year. Thank you to everyone who attended our State of the Schools presentation last month. It’s important that we update our community on where we are as a district both academically, financially and with our facilities. I encourage all of you to please take the time to watch the video recording of the presentation. It will give you a deeper understanding of the school district, as well as answer questions you may have. To view the video, click here.
We have additional information to share with our school community regarding our district facilities and we invite you all to come out to Avon Middle School at 6 p.m. March 11 to participate in our Future Facilities Planning Meeting. This meeting presents an opportunity to explore the current state of our facilities and discuss our vision for the future. Did you know our current district Board of Education office building on Detroit Road, which was once the Village School and Avon High School many many years ago, is turning 100 years old this year!
Congratulations to our winter sports student athletes and coaches on completing successful seasons. We had several students and teams advance in tournament action. Our spring sports are in full swing and we wish everyone good luck this season.
We have six Avon Middle School students who will be competing this week in the county Spelling Bee sponsored by the Educational Service Center of Lorain County and Elyria Chronicle Telegram newspaper. The winner of the Spelling Bee advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. Best of luck!
Thank you for your continued support of our schools. I hope all of you have a wonderful and relaxing Spring Break!
As always, if there are any questions/concerns, please call or email.
Sincerely,
Ben Hodge

Curriculum Update: Dyslexia
Avon Local Schools has completed all K-3 screening requirements as outlined in Ohio’s dyslexia support laws (ORC 3323.251). The law requires that districts administer an Ohio Department of Education and Workforce approved screening assessment to all K-3 students during the 2023-2024 school year, and to any student in grades 4-6 whose parent requests and consents to the screening. Teachers administered the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills) assessment in the first few weeks of the school year to screen for reading difficulties, including dyslexia in all grades 1-3 students. Students who showed well below benchmark overall performance on the measure were provided targeted instruction to improve literacy skills that included twice monthly progress monitoring assessments to track improvement. Kindergarten students completed their assessments during the final week of January and began targeted instruction in February. Families of students received a printed copy of their child’s DIBELS report, in addition to suggested activities for home support. National Merit Finalists
Avon High School is pleased to announce the five National Merit Semifinalists have advanced to Finalist standing in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to seniors Daniel Jurca, Jay Kneiss, Cameron Lam, Jackson Ourednik, and Anika Pundir
These academically talented Finalists represent less than 1-percent of the nation’s high school seniors and have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered later this spring. The National Merit Scholarship Program is a not-for-profit organization that awards scholarships to high school seniors annually.

Total Eclipse
A historical total eclipse will take place April 8 and Avon will be in the center of it. For a brief incredible moment you will see the moon gradually slide in front of the sun, reducing it to a thin crescent and then blotting the sun out altogether. A total eclipse is so rare that the last one took place in Ohio in 1806 and the next chance to see one here in Avon will be in 2099. Avon and the surrounding area will experience an increase in traffic and viewers.
Reminder, there is no school on April 8.
Safety is the most important part of viewing the eclipse. Specialized eye protection is required to safely view the eclipse. All Avon students and staff will receive a pair of safety glasses. For more information on viewing the eclipse safely, click here.
