Weekly Community Updates - February 28, 2025
Dear Students and Families,
This past Wednesday, the 1st progress reports were posted. You can find your student's grades on ParentVUE under "Report Card". This is a snapshot of how your student is doing at this moment. This is an opportunity to take a look and if you have questions, reach out to the teachers. Students have until May to earn their final grades so there is time for students to adjust their grades.
In addition, Oceana has a dance next Friday with new dance rules. The biggest difference is no large bags are permitted. Below is a blurb with everything you need to know about the new rules. If you have any questions, please reach out to Vice Principal Jose Campos at jcampos@jeffersonunion.net. We look forward to everyone enjoying a safe night at the dance!
To Senior Families: Please encourage your student to apply for the Oceana General Scholarship. Last school year, we gave out $37K to 44 students. We can only give out scholarships to students who submit their application. Directions below in the Senior Section.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!
Take care,
Maritza Torres
Black History Month Figure Highlight
Before the March on Washington, Bayard Rustin was the brilliant mind behind the scenes who made it all happen. A key strategist and organizer for the Civil Rights Movement, Rustin was the architect of the 1963 March on Washington, where over 250,000 people gathered to demand racial equality, jobs, and justice. He was a master of nonviolent protest and played a crucial role in shaping the movement, though his contributions were often overshadowed by others in the spotlight.
Rustin’s activism didn’t stop there. He was also a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, peace, and social justice, even though being openly gay at the time led to criticism and challenges within the movement. Despite facing both racial and homophobic discrimination, Rustin remained dedicated to fighting for justice and equality for all.
His work paved the way for significant change, yet his story was often left untold. But today, we remember Bayard Rustin for his unwavering dedication, brilliance, and courage.
New Dance Rules: What You Need to Know
Oceana students, before you head to the dance, be sure you're familiar with the rules to ensure a fun and safe night.
Students will not be admitted 30 minutes after the dance begins, so don’t be fashionably late past 7:00 pm. If you need to leave, you may do so 1.5 hours after the start without a parent call. Backpacks and large bags are not permitted, small bags (5.5" by 8") are allowed for students whose attire do not include pockets. All students will be searched before entering, and students may be rechecked at any time. Only unopened disposable water bottles are allowed, and outside opened drinks are not permitted. If you bring a guest from another school, you are responsible for their behavior.
Students must comply with all supervising personnel immediately when given a directive. The school dress code will still be enforced, so plan your outfit accordingly. Prohibited items include weapons such as pocket knives or pepper spray, as well as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and even over-the-counter pain relievers. Any student who fails to follow these rules may be removed from the dance, and their family will be called to pick them up. Follow the guidelines, be respectful, and enjoy the night!
For the full new Rules and Protocols, please review this document.
Youth Voting Advisory Committee Applications Due March 2nd
The mission of the committee is to advise and to help spread election and voting information and to increase pre-registration, registration and voting among young voters.
The Youth Voting Advisory Committee also provides recommendations identifying and prioritizing activities, programs, and policies to ensure young voters have equal access to the ballot and understand how to register to vote. Consider applying to have you voice heard!
Ramadan
On behalf of schools with students fasting for Ramadan, the California Department of Education (CDE) has approved Jefferson Union High School District for a Ramadan Meal Waiver. This waiver allows schools to send a breakfast and a lunch home with students, in attendance, that are fasting. Non-fasting students will receive school breakfast and lunch, as usual, that are to be consumed at school.
Students who are fasting during Ramadan will have the option to receive a take home lunch for the day of service, and a breakfast for the following day beginning Friday, February 28-Friday until April 4, 2025. Please visit the school cafeteria during normal hours and request a takeaway lunch and breakfast.
Each meal is served according to state and federal school breakfast/lunch requirements.

Mock Trial Competition
In January and February, Oceana participated in Teach Democracy’s Mock Trial competition at the Redwood City Courthouse. In Mock Trial, students take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs, court clerks, court artists, and court journalists for a criminal case; this year’s case was an alleged kidnapping of a candidate for the city council in a small town in California where the town and council candidates were divided over the issue of short-term rentals. Oceana’s team won 4 of their 6 trial competitions and did a wonderful job throughout the competition season.
Oceana's court artists, Aubrey DePriest and Adelina Lim, won first and second place in the Court Artist competition and our court journalist, Sarah Ghazzawi, won second place in the court journalist competition. Aubrey, Adelina, and Sarah are all able to attend the state competition in March. This is the second year in a row that all three students have won in the court artist and court journalist county competitions and were able to attend the state competition. Members of this year’s Mock Trial Team are: Sarah Ghazzawi, Benny Manio, Theodore Schimizzi, Ashley Rain Anacleto, Jiro De Guzman, Marina Sergeeva, Cesar Pumacayo, Savanna Valle, Jayden Vong, Justin Hsu, Aubrey Depriest, Emil Groth, Renzo Fukuda, Sofia Tong, Adelina Lim, Roger LeBlanc, Jeffrey Vasquez, Makayla Torres, and Alex Ha. Alamea Lewis was our alternate and tireless supporter throughout the competition. Our team’s amazing attorney coach is Marc Zafferano.

Graduation Stoles
Last school year, Academic Council approved for graduates to wear one stole to the graduation ceremony. Academic Council wanted students to have a choice of representing a part of their identity, if they wish to do so. This will be the first year we are trying to give choices to students. We worked with Heff Jones to give options to students to choose from, graduating seniors can fill out this google form and choose a stole to wear at graduation. If seniors do not choose by March 21st, they will be ordered a standard red Oceana stole. Heff Jones will collect the orders, Oceana will pay for the stoles and the stoles will be given out during graduation practice.
Only seniors should order stoles for the 2025 Graduation. Graduation will be Thursday May 29th at 6pm in the gym.
