A MESSAGE FROM DR. ELLISON
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Congratulations to the orchestra students. They did a fabulous job performing last night at the concert. We look forward to seeing our families tonight at the Lunar New Year event from 5:30-7:30. It is an evening filled with fun activities and performances. All are welcome to attend!
It has been a chilly week at Glen Grove. Our students are doing a great job with this stretch of indoor recess. We are looking forward to warmer weather soon so they can head outdoors for recess. Please make sure to send your child with warm clothing as we will be outside if the real feel is above 10 degrees.
Recently our social/emotional learning team launched a lesson on kindness and teasing as we have noticed an increase in students using teasing language or unkind language in a “joking” manner. We are helping our students understand that unkind words are not a joke at Glen Grove and we want to treat each other with care and kindness. Our students have done a great job with this lesson and we even have third graders who have initiated an empathy club on their own! Thanks for continuing to teach your children about kindness and helping them grow into caring individuals.
Finally, I hope that everyone is enjoying the One School, One Book “A Rover Story”. We have hosted book clubs in the LRC as well as an upcoming recycle robot building session. It is such a fun way for our school to connect with each other!
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns.
In partnership,
Kate Ellison

Dental Exams at School
Dental health is an important part of a child’s overall health – we love to see our students’ healthy smiles!
This spring, District 34 is bringing Orland Park Dental Services (OPDS) to our schools to provide dental exams to any of our students who need them. As a reminder, the State of Illinois requires students in grades K, 2, and 6 to submit proof of a dental exam – but these in-school appointments with OPDS are open to any and all students! They provide dental services to children on public aid as well as those with private dental insurance.
The exams are provided by caring, licensed dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants with state-of-the-art portable dental equipment. OPDS has been providing in-school dental services since 1999 and their healthcare professionals ensure a clean, safe, and comfortable environment within the schools.
Parents and guardians who complete the consent form do not have to join their child at the appointment (but you are welcome to come in). If you have questions or need assistance, contact District Nurse Shari Stadler.
Mandatory Health Forms for 2025-2026 Incoming 6th Graders
All incoming 6th grade students MUST have a physical examination (within the last 12 months), including required vaccinations, turned in prior to the first day of school in August, 2025. Your child will NOT be able to start middle school until the physical form is turned in.
Additionally, a dental exam completed after December 31, 2024 will complete the 6th grade dental exam requirement.
If your child's health forms are already complete, you can turn them into the Glen Grove health office any time between now and the last day of school. They will be forwarded to your child's middle school with their health file. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Hastings, Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394. Click here for the health exam form.
Dress for the Weather Everyday!
Will it rain? Will it snow? Will the temperature be in 50's or the 20's?
Be sure to check the weather report to make sure your child has everything they need to be warm and dry!
Please note that if there is snow on the ground, recess is as follows:
- Boots and snowpants - OK to play in the fields
- Boots only - must stay on the woodchips (can play on equipment)
- No boots - must stay on the blacktop
If your child wears boots to school, don't forget to pack gym shoes.
PLEASE!!
This time of year brings with it a lot of clothing! Please label your child's coat, hat, boots, etc. to make returning any lost items back to the student easier. Thank you!!
NEWS FROM THE LRC
Recycled Robot Showcase
All students are welcome to participate in the showcase. Building will take place at home. Students can bring their robots to the library from January 21 to January 31. Students who turn in a robot will be able to record themselves at school with a teacher’s help. They will share what their robot does as a job and how it would work if it had power. A QR code will be generated for each robot. The robots and their QR codes will be on display at our OSOB Family Night.
OSOB Trivia
Each week of the reading there is an optional trivia for the students. This optional activity is a fun way to participate. Students receive an email from me on Mondays and have until the end of the school day on Thursdays to answer the questions. Winners are announced on the Friday morning announcements. Congratulations to our week one winners:
Maya in PET, Phil in DAH and Krish in CHA.
OSOB Friday Recess Book Club
This optional activity started last Friday. Students have the choice to stay in for recess to read and talk about the book. We had a great time discussing the character traits of Rez (the main character). We have one more book club meeting next Friday.
Mark Your Calendars
The One School, One Book Family Night evening will take place on Friday, February 7 from 5:30pm-7:00pm. We hope to see everyone at the event. Author Jasmine Warga will be here to talk about her writing and A Rover’s Story. She will also be signing copies of her books. Many kids brought in their books to be signed when she was with us earlier this month. She signed any of her books at the event but she will also personalize students’ copies of A Rover’s Story.
We Need Recycled Materials
We need recycled plastic bottle tops for our OSOB Family Event. Ms. Hausman is going to be helping students create a really neat art project with the material. Please collect any flip top (like salad dressing or syrup bottles) or even water bottle tops so that the students can make the project at our event. Send the collected tops in by February 5.
JLG’s Bookmark Contest
Junior Library Guild, a book publisher we purchase titles from for our library, is having a bookmark contest. The National Library Week theme for 2025 is “Drawn to the Library!” The deadline is March 6 but I need to scan the entries and submit them so please have them in by Monday, March 3. The blank bookmark template is included in this newsletter. Please note, don’t cut the bookmark out. Completed entries can be returned to the library by March 3.
SCIENCE NEWS
Welcome back to science, 3rd grade Gators! We have started up Unit 2 and are currently reviewing the awesome things we already know about ecosystems from our K-2 learning. Soon we will be shifting into exploring different animal adaptations so we can eventually get to work on creating a brand new animal that has never been seen before! SO many exciting things to learn about in this unit. Stay tuned for more!
4th grade has officially exited from their 2nd science unit and have headed into social studies. See you in a few weeks!
And get ready 5th grade...environmental science and biology are coming your way soon!
GEF Recital Night & Mariachi de Joliet Performance
Tuesday, January 28th | 6:15-8:45 PM | Attea Middle School
Join us for an exciting evening of music at the GEF Recital Night! Advanced band and orchestra students from across the district will be performing in small groups, showcasing their talent in 30-minute recitals. After each performance, students will receive constructive feedback from clinicians to help them grow as musicians.
In addition to the student recitals, the Glenview Education Foundation is proud to sponsor a special performance by Mariachi de Joliet from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the Attea cafeteria. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to enjoy the vibrant sounds of Mariachi music.
The event is free, and all are welcome to attend! Recital times for your child have been provided by their band/orchestra teacher, and performances will be staggered throughout the evening. Come support our talented students and enjoy a diverse musical experience!
We hope to see you there!
