Bourne High School Weekly Update
This week Mr. Dow presented to sophomores in advance of their ELA MCAS next week. He shared information about the benefits of doing well on the assessments, including the financial implications with scholarships. See below for more info.
Did You Know?
The ELA and Mathematics results for tenth-graders (and for eleventh-graders who had not previously participated in the grade 10 ELA and/or Mathematics tests) are used to determine eligibility for the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship. A Massachusetts public high school student automatically qualifies for the Adams Scholarship if his or her results satisfy the following three requirements:
- a score in the Advanced category in either grade 10 ELA, Mathematics, or STE (biology, chemistry, Introductory Physics or Technology/Engineering)
- a score in the Proficient or Advanced category in the second subject (ELA or Mathematics)
- a combined MCAS score on these assessments that ranks in the top 25% in their school district.
Mr. Dow also shared information about the MCAS and reminders on test-taking strategies. Here is some information families can review with students:
- Students Must Bring their School-Issued Chromebooks to School For Testing Purposes
- Students will be testing in small group rooms conducive to test-taking. The test is untimed, so students will be given as much time as they need as long as they are actively working on the test.
- Everyone deserves a quiet, stress-free testing environment. Rooms should be silent during the testing window.
- Breakfast will be available for all students as soon as they arrive to school.
- Cell phones, smart watches, and all electronic devices besides the Chromebook are not allowed in the testing room, even when a student finishes testing.
- Practice tests are available here for all MCAS tested subjects.
- Please impress upon your students to take this test seriously. Take the time to show us what you know, and make yourself proud, your school proud, and your community proud!
