From the Principal's Desk—
Hello Hilltopper Families!
Our students have hit the ground running, showing great enthusiasm and focus as they return to their learning this week. It has been truly inspiring to see them dive back into their routines with energy and excitement. Whether it's working hard in math, reading or tackling new skills, our students are embracing challenges with determination and effort- I am incredibly proud of their commitment.
To help set the tone for the year ahead, we kicked off the new year and second semester last week with a PBIS New Year Reboot Assembly, where we reviewed what it means to "Topper Up" in our school community. Students learned that we’ve raised the bar in areas like Lexia, AR (Accelerated Reader) and PBIS tickets and they have to work a bit harder to earn book tokens. We even added an “extra” math packet available in the office. It’s exciting to see how motivated our students are to achieve new milestones and continue growing. Check out the newsletter below for pictures of students who are ALREADY well on their way to reaching these expectations.
As we look ahead, please remember that Monday, January 20th, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and there will be no school in observance of this important holiday.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us make this a fantastic year for our students. Here's to the rest of January being filled with endless learning possibilities and continued growth! Have a wonderful LONG weekend and stay warm!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Makee
Park Welcomes Mrs. Rhamy as a Reading Tutor!
I am so excited to join the staff at Park elementary! Teaching reading is my true passion and I am happy to get the chance to work with students at Park and help them grow their reading skills and become successful!
I previously taught 1st grade in the Riverside School district, and then took some time to stay home and raise my own children. Currently, I teach preschool part time in Willowick. I live in Chardon with my husband and three kids, who also attend Chardon schools. Henry is in 5th grade at CMS, Anna is a second grader here at Park, and Jake, who is 4, attends preschool with me.
PARENTS OF GRADE 2 STUDENTS ONLY:
The State of Ohio requires school districts to offer whole-grade testing to all students twice during their education to identify gifted learners. As part of this process, all 2nd-grade students will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) from February 3-7, 2025. The CogAT assesses overall cognitive and reasoning abilities and can identify students who meet the qualifying score as gifted in superior cognitive ability. Based on the results, some students may undergo additional evaluation for possible gifted identification in creative thinking ability. After testing, individual student CogAT results will be sent home with students. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this assessment, please feel free to contact Linda Elegante or Megan Kinney at megan.kinney@chardonschools.org.
Topper Tuesdays!
Every Tuesday at Park School will be TOPPER TUESDAY! Join us as Students and Staff wear their Chardon Topper spirit wear or any Red or Black gear you like.

Doctor's Note When Out Sick
Please note that if your child is out sick for 3 consecutive days, he/she will need a doctor's note to return to school, after the 3rd day of being absent.
Attention Parents/ Guardians: As you know there are many respiratory illnesses surging:
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and the Flu (influenza) are among these. Both
viruses can have similar symptoms. It is important to monitor your child for these
symptoms and keep them home if they are sick. Some common symptoms are fever,
fatigue, cough, loss of appetite, sore throat, runny nose/congestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, wheezing and body aches. If you notice these symptoms please take your
child to see a healthcare provider to confirm with a simple test what illness they have.
Continued hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes is our greatest defense in
keeping those around us healthy. If your child is sick please keep them home per your
provider's recommendations.
Reminder, as with any illness, children should be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducers prior to returning to school.
Thank you for your continued help in keeping our schools healthy.

WOW! Mrs. Carver's Class Reward - Silly Stringing Mrs. Carver AND Mrs. Makee!!
Mrs. Carver's 2nd Grade Class had read 187,300 AR words total. The challenge was on to get to 300,000 words! The prize: SILLY STRING MRS. CARVER! The class not only reached, but surpassed their goal of 300,000 AR words, and they are now at an impressive 395,000 words! 🎉
The students really put their reading skills to the test. They were excited to see Mrs. Carver get covered in silly string, and it’s even more fun that Mrs. Makee joined in the celebration!
This is a great example of teamwork and dedication. Keep it up, everyone!
You’re reading rockstars! 📚✨
