Academic reading involves understanding three tiers of vocabulary:
- **Tier 1**: Common everyday words.

- **Tier 3**: Subject-specific terminology, like "quadratic" in math or "hemoglobin" in biology.
Media specialist can assist in teaching Tier 2 vocabulary by providing nonfiction resources and guiding students in academic reading strategies.
