Reminder about school wide expectations
Please take time to review our schoolwide expectations and continuum of behaviors and supports. We want to make sure that Peninsula is a place where everyone feels safe and supported.
Safety Reminder:
Just a reminder to all families entering Peninsula School to please buzz in at the front door and check in at the office. For the safety and security of all our students, please do not let any other individuals into the school if you are being let in. Please also refrain from standing in doorways with the doors open. This helps us keep everyone safe.
Reminder: Please call the attendance line if your child is missing school
Please call our attendance line at 503-916-6275 or email Sara at sgilds@pps.net if your child is missing school with the reason they are out. If there are multiple unexcused absences it is a district wide protocol that a teacher or member of our team will reach out to see how we can best support with getting your child to school. We know it can be hard and we are here to problem solve and support you and your family!
End of Year Events Explained
There was a request at the PTA meeting to share a little more information about school events so that new families would feel more informed. Hopefully this will be helpful for our end of the year activities:
Talent Show June 12th: The talent show is an annual tradition that has taken place for many years at Peninsula. Prior to covid it consisted of all live performances, in front of the whole school and students and staff were invited to perform. During online learning we kept it going through video submissions and found that this format allowed a wider range of acts than were possible on our stage. Since returning to the building, we have continued with video acts that have been shown in classrooms and streamed to families at home. This year we are adding in a few live, whole class performances if classroom teachers organize them, and the rest will be video submissions shown to the whole school in the cafeteria the afternoon of June 12th. We will send a video link out to families so that they may also enjoy the show but are not inviting families to join in the building at this point just because we have pretty limited space with the whole student body in attendance. If you have further questions, please contact Rachel Bogdanoff (Ms. B.) at rbogdano@pps.net
Field Day June 13th: Field Day is another Peninsula tradition that has been rolled out in different ways over the years. Generally, field day consists of students coming outside to the field and playground and participating in a variety of games, races, and activities with the purpose of being outdoors and having some good old fun as the year comes to an end. Family volunteers are a big part of helping to make field day successful so if you are available to help on June 13th, we need support with set up, supervision, running activities and clean up. Here is a link to sign up to help. If you have further questions, please contact Courtney Sherman at csherman@pps.net
Kindergarten Promotion June 14th: On the last day of school our kindergarten students get promoted up to 1st grade. This typically consists of a short ceremony where the teachers speak to families and the students sing a few songs and then get named as they cross the stage. It’s pretty adorable. Students get a small snack and then families are invited to join students for recess and then they can bring their student home, or the student can remain in school for the remainder of the day. This year kindergarten promotion will be on June 14th at 9:30 and will likely last for about an hour. If you have further questions, please call our main office at 503-916-6275 or speak with your child’s kindergarten teacher at pick up.
5th Grade Picnic/Promotion June 14th: On the last day of school our 5th graders typically have a celebratory picnic or bbq (parents typically help to coordinate/run that.) It has been held here at school and also at Columbia and Kenton Parks in the past. After lunch, the students and families are invited to a promotion ceremony in the cafeteria which typically consists of the teachers speaking, a slide show and the students walking across the stage to receive a certificate marking the end of their elementary school years. We also do a clap out as the 5th graders walk the hallways one last time with their fellow students and former teachers cheering them out the door. This year’s 5th grade promotion will begin at 1 pm. If you have further questions, please call our main office at 503-916-6275, email Ned (eharkness@pps.net) or Mr. Parker (tparker@pps.net) or speak with them at pick up.
