Need to Know
Beach Day & Polar Bear Plunge: Our annual Beach Day is January 22nd! Students are invited to dress up in their favourite beach attire for the day. Resort rules apply: shirts and shoes are required! Let’s bring some warmth to this cold January and have a little mid-term fun! Grade 7&8 students who would like to participate in the Polar Bear Plunge - jumping into a pool of cold water outside - must have parental permission to do so. Parents must complete this consent form.
Grade 7&8 dance at The Study Jan 24: Students are invited to sign up for this inter-school event taking place on Friday, January 24 from 7-10pm at The Study. Tickets can only be purchased online using the QR code on the poster or this link. Students need to bring their ID cards; tickets will not be sold at the door.
2nd Half-year MS arts classes begin on Monday, January 27. Class lists will be posted in mySelwyn on Friday afternoon, January 24. Reminder: Each Middle School student will have the opportunity to participate in four of the art class options - drama, debating, digital arts, hip hop history & movement, music technology & audio production, and visual arts - over their two years in Middle School (unless students have selected jazz band, which is a full year course).
Periodic Table of Black Canadians: To celebrate Black History Month, we are making a Periodic Table of Canadian Black History to highlight notable Canadian Black figures, past and present, who have made impressive contributions to our society. Complete with QR codes, our periodic table will be displayed and will allow students and staff to learn more about these Black Canadians through biographies, news articles, or videos. Use this Google Form to submit the name of your Black Canadian, include a reliable source of information about your figure & earn house points! Submit by January 31, 2024. The completed table will be unveiled in February.
Lunar New Year Bubble Tea Project: As announced in yesterday’s assemblies, students can order bubble tea from Grade 10 student Nathan Chen’s company until Lunar New Year. Students must order between 7am-10pm the day before using his website. The day after you place your order, you can pick up your drink from Nathan’s table just outside of Coristine Hall at lunchtime. All of the profits will be donated to a local organization and/or to future Lunar New Year initiatives. Please note: Once 30 orders have been placed per day, the website will display "Sold Out." You will be able to place an order the following day.
Messages from the School Counsellor:
Worried About Screens? Provide your opinion! On June 6, 2024, the Assemblée nationale du Québec created the Select Parliamentary Committee on the Impacts of Screens and Social Media on Young People's Health and Development. Between now and May 2025, if you want your voice to be heard, you are invited to complete this short questionnaire.
Age limits for social media access: Shira Levitt, a clinical social worker in our community, has been working on a petition advocating for the implementation of age limits on social media access for children and youth in Quebec. Inspired by recent policy changes in Australia, where similar age restriction measures have been successfully implemented, Shira believes this petition could make a meaningful difference in protecting the well-being of students here in Quebec. Click here for the link to the petition.
Research to Help Children and Teens with Tourette Syndrome: There is currently a research opportunity that may benefit families of children and adolescents with Tourette Syndrome. If you have a child or teen aged 8 to 14 with Tourette Syndrome, consider having them participate. To learn more and sign up, please visit the study link.
