Mr. Kirschenbaum, ELA
Mr. O'Malley, Math 6 and 7
Ms. Wesselhoft, Geography
Students are wrapping up Unit 5 with presentations about what they would do to address/solve one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This allows us to think about how we can sustain this rapidly growing population.
Next week, students will briefly present their PowerPoint projects. We will watch a documentary about cities. We will then begin Unit 6: Europe – maps, vocabulary, thematic map exploration!
Ms. Osman, Science
Hello Scientists!
Last week in science, students discovered that energy transferring from a warm air parcel to the colder surrounding air can cause rain. This week in science, we will continue building our knowledge of weather and the water cycle by learning on Monday about the specific formation of clouds. We will learn about different types of clouds as well as connect our understanding of energy transfer and the process of condensation. Tuesday we will look into what makes air parcels warmer and the rain effects it creates. Wednesday we will take our critical juncture midpoint quiz to see how students are progressing. As the week finishes, we will wrap up by discussing weather fronts and take a Roots quiz on Thursday. Your student might notice that every first Roots quiz of an Advisory is focused on Math. Previous Advisories had roots that were about the Earth Sciences. This Advisory, we will be preparing for 7th grade by focusing on roots that are used in Biology.
Roots 4-1 are:
*mono = 1 Greek
hepta = 7 Greek
centric= center Latin
*dia = across, through Greek
*fract = broken, crushed Latin
Please discuss with your student the importance of learning how to use Amplify and of the importance of keeping a neat Science journal. I will also be stressing that students are to use the same manners that are expected at home and that includes putting trash in the appropriate container, cleaning any marks off of desks and chairs, and using the same words you expect like "please" and "thank you".
Thank you especially to the folks who sent in cups and pencils and tissues!!! As the weather gets warmer, more and more of the students will need to drink water and they will have it! Thank you!
Ms. Patsalos, Intermediate ESOL
Ms. Garcia, Beginner ELA and Geography
This week, students in ELA for MLL Beginners will read and analyze a text set that includes 3-4 folktales in preparation for their end-of-year writing project: write a short fictional screen play and then act out, film, edit, and publish it as a movie. Their screen plays will be loosely aligned with folktales and I am really looking forward to what they are going to create!
Last week, students in World Geography for MLLs published their second digital book of the year! This week, they will start Unit 4, which is on the evolution of humans and how we came to populate the entire globe. First, they will study the human migration paths out of Africa and then focus on studying the 6 cradles of civilization. The unit will culminate with a project where they build a 3D model of a selected cradle of civilization and give an accompanying oral presentation on the topic.
I am so impressed with the progress that MLL beginners are making in their ability to read in English! Last week, the students in Beginning Literacy for MLLs earned fantastic scores on their independent reading tasks and almost all students are now consistently able to read a leveled book and score a minimum of 85% on the comprehension questions. This was definitely NOT the case at the beginning of the year-wow! This week, students will continue to work on System 44 but this will soon take a long pause when we turn in our devices for the DC Cape. Since we will be computer-free for one month, students will continue to build their phonetic and reading skills through paper-based stations that improve their reading fluency, comprehension, and use of vowels/blends. They will also engage in weekly vocabulary studies that will include a quiz every other week.
