PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
Starting on Feb. 1st through Feb. 24th our school is having a penny drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Leukemia is cancer of the blood, and causes more deaths than any other cancer in children, adolescents, and young adults. The donations received for this drive will go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help with therapy to assist individuals with this condition.
On Tuesday January 31st students will bring home a flier explaining the purpose of this drive, and they will also bring home a small box that they can collect change in for their donation. There is also website for online donations which is as follows: http://event.lls.org/pages/wa/big-lake-Elementary- School-2017. Our schools goal for this drive is $750.Please help us reach our goal. This is a voluntary fundraiser and your child is not required to participate.
If you have any questions please call Nurse Moore @ 892-9705.
NAEP Testing March 2
Big Lake Elementary’s 4th graders have been chosen to participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) assessment on March 2, 2017. This assessment is the tool that our Nation uses to collect information regarding the academic progress of the Nation’s school system. Each student is randomly assigned either a math or reading assessment and the results are only used for informational purposes. These results are not used for grading your child’s ability in any way. In fact our school or district does not even view any of the test questions or results. Students are encouraged to do their very best. Like the administration of the state tests we ensure the confidentiality and integrity of the test through specific protocols. A group of testers will come to our school to administer this test to ensure that all testing protocols are followed. If you have any additional questions or concerns about this test please feel free to contact Mrs. Lovelace at 892-9746.
FROM THE NURSE RE: LICE
Parents,
The message below is the districts head lice policy. It is imperative that you check your children often and remind them to not share hats, combs, headbands, or coats. When your child arrives at school remind them to put their hat in the sleeve of their coat, by doing this it keeps hats separated.
If your child has a case of head lice please call the school nurse as she can help you with different ways to get rid of it. In cleaning the house to remove lice remember all bedding needs to be washed with hot water along with any clothing the child has worn. Any stuffed toys or items that cannot be laundered can be put in a large trash bag with the top tied, and set aside for a week. Floors and carpets should be vacuumed too.
If you have any questions or concerns please call Nurse Moore at 892-9705.
Students BP 5l4l.22(b) Head Lice Policy
Upon notification of suspected cases of head lice, the school nurse or designee will examine the student, and the student will remain in his/her classroom for the remainder of the day.
If live lice are found in the hair, the parent will be notified to use over-the-counter treatment, via phone, email, and/or a note sent home with the student. The next day, an examination of the student will take place by the school nurse or designee. The student may remain at school if there is no presence of live lice. If there are nits present, the student may remain in school. Presence of nits does not indicate active infestation.
Head lice can be a nuisance but they have not been known to spread disease. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice. In cases that involve head lice, as in all school health issues, the student's privacy will be protected.
