Best Buddies Programs Receive Generous Donation
The Mt. Hope High School and Kickemuit Middle School Best Buddies programs received a significant donation from a current MHHS student, Adriano Coelho, and his father, Chris Coelho.
By holding a Pokemon card auction fundraiser on the streaming app Whatnot, they were able to raise $19,600. Mr. Coelho had been teaching his son about the importance of giving back to his community, so Adriano donated their earnings to the middle school and high school Best Buddies programs, giving each school's program $9,800!
Thank you very much, Chris and Adriano, for your incredibly generous donation!
The Coelho's donation was done with the help of other streamers throughout the country. The district would also like to acknowledge:
Scott Czaja
Michael Wood
Jamie Beran
Marvin Robbins
Britney Washburn
Thank you all for helping out with this amazingly generous donation!

KMS Science Teacher Presents to New England Educators
Recently, a 7th grade science teacher at our Kickemuit Middle School, Jillian Schneider, was selected to present to middle school science teachers from across New England on ideas, tools, resources, and lesson plans that can be used to educate their students on the April 8th solar eclipse.
Congratulations Jillian!
Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
Our elementary schools have been selected to be a part of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program!
The FFVP provides free fresh fruits and vegetables to our students during the school day. This allows them to try a wide variety of different fruits and vegetables, and helps increase the overall acceptance and consumption of fresh, unprocessed produce among children.
Hugh Cole Performs Moana, Jr.
Hugh Cole Elementary School students, from second grade all the way up to fifth grade, took the stage at Kickemuit Middle School for two performances of Moana, Jr. After working hard in rehearsals for nearly four months to learn their parts and all of their lines, the students did such a fantastic job with both performances!
Thank you Arts Alive in Barrington for helping our students put on a great show for our communities!
Guiteras Egg Drop Project
Recently our 5th grade engineers at Guiteras were given a project based learning challenge and they were certainly up for it!
The goal was to create a device that will allow a hard-boiled egg to land gently, without cracking, when dropped from a significant height. Students created a blueprint design and then built prototypes using a variety of materials and their knowledge of gravity and other forces on Earth. All engineers tested their prototypes from the balcony in the school gym. The most successful prototypes that from each 5th grade class were selected to be dropped from the top of Bristol Fire Department's ladder engine truck in front of the entire school!
Thank you Bristol Fire Department for helping our students at Guiteras learn about gravity!
Colt Andrews Visits MHHS Art Exhibit at Rogers Free Library
Some classes at Colt Andrews recently took a trip to Rogers Free Library to view the Mt. Hope High School student artwork that was on display!
Colt Andrews Fun Run
Although it was a very cold and windy day, our Colt Andrews students still had a blast at their annual Fun Run fundraiser in the Bristol Town Common!
In addition to being a great time for the students, the Fun Run also helped raise $16,885 for future school enrichment programs and family fun nights.
Updated CDC Guidance For Respiratory Viruses
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its Respiratory Virus Guidance to provide practical recommendations and information to help lower risk for a range of common respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV. The Rhode Island Department of Health has updated covid.ri.gov to reflect these changes.
All community settings, including schools and districts, should consider:
- Stay up to date with your vaccines
- Practice good hygiene by covering your coughs and sneezes, washing or sanitizing your hands often, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces
- Take steps for cleaner air by increasing both circulation and ventilation
- When you may have a respiratory virus:
- Stay home and away from others until, for 24 hours, both your symptoms are getting better, and you’re fever free without fever-reducing meds.
- Seek health care promptly for testing and/or treatment if you have risk factors for severe illness. Treatment may help lower your risk of severe illness.
2. Using additional strategies to further protect students, staff, and faculty:
CDC guidance highlights when it is especially helpful for districts and schools to layer core and additional prevention strategies at the individual, group, or facility level:
- People are at increased risk of severe outcomes from respiratory illnesses.
- People were recently exposed to a respiratory virus, are sick, or are recovering.
- Respiratory viruses are increasing in the community. Find updated COVID-19 data and trends on Rhode Island COVID-19 Data Hub at covid.ri.gov/data. Find flu data and trends on RIDOH’s Influenza Surveillance webpage on health.ri.gov.
Districts and schools should consider specific strategies for people with risk factors for severe illness:
- Older adults
- Young children
- People with weakened immune systems
- People with disabilities
- Pregnant people
