Inclement Weather
❄️ Snow is in the forecast! ❄️
Depending on which weather app you trust (and where you’re located in our 395-square-mile district), you may have seen some snowflakes predicted for this weekend into Monday. Forecasting weather-related school closures is challenging, as our district covers 395 square miles. Snow or icy conditions may vary widely between areas. Our team takes many factors into account when deciding whether to keep schools open, delay the start, or close for the day, with student safety as the top priority.
Please take a moment to brush up on our inclement weather procedures so you’re prepared: https://www.swsd.k12.wa.us/page/inclement-weather
What about the February 14th possible make-up day? 💡
With snow in the forecast, we’re not yet in a position to officially release Friday, February 14, as a non-school/snow make-up day until after Tuesday. So please don’t make any plans you can’t cancel!
When are decisions made?
Our goal is to make a decision by 5 a.m., though sometimes, deteriorating conditions require later announcements, which may occur as late as 6 a.m. If a two-hour delay has been announced and conditions continue to worsen, a final decision to cancel school will be made by 8 a.m. to avoid buses leaving the garage unnecessarily.
Parent Decision: While we make every effort to assess the conditions, parents have the final say in determining whether to send their child to school during inclement weather.
No News is Good News
If no announcement has been made, school will begin at regularly scheduled times. All changes to the school schedule will be posted on the district website, Facebook page, and reported to local news media.
When will my bus come?
Bus routes follow the same schedule as our schools. If there is a two-hour delay, bus pick-ups will be approximately two hours later than usual. If roads are not passable, alternate stops may be used. For questions, contact the Transportation Department at (360) 855-3504.
Stronger Together
We take pride in recognizing staff members who exemplify our Stronger Together: Building Bridges with Kindness theme. This program highlights the incredible individuals who go above and beyond to foster compassion, support, and a positive culture in our schools and community.
Julie Baxter: Building Bridges with Kindness Through Nutrition and Care
At State Street High School, Julie Baxter serves as more than a cook and cashier—she is a pillar of support, kindness, and care for students and staff alike. Julie exemplifies the Sedro-Woolley School District’s 2024-25 theme, "Stronger Together: Building Bridges with Kindness," by ensuring every student feels valued and supported.
For Julie, the best part of her job is making meaningful connections with students while providing them with nourishment.
“I enjoy engaging with our youth and feeding their hungry bellies,” she says. Julie's care extends beyond the cafeteria; she ensures students struggling to make it through the day have something to keep them going. “Even in times between classes, some kids struggle to make it until lunch, and I always try to find them a little something to get them through.”
Julie’s kindness shines in her approach to connecting with shy and introverted students.
“There are a few students who are shy and have a hard time even filling out their lunch orders,” she said.
Julie goes out of her way to help these students, ensuring they receive the meals they need while fostering trust and understanding. Her care helps students see her as a trusted confidante and good listener—someone they can rely on in challenging times.
The theme of “Building Bridges with Kindness” holds special meaning for Julie, who understands the impact of a supportive community. Reflecting on a recent leave of absence due to health issues, she shares, “I was blown away by how missed I was by all my students and staff. This year has been very humbling, and I am so happy to be surrounded by a good group of people.”
Julie’s role in the school community goes beyond providing meals; she fosters a sense of belonging and safety for everyone she serves. Her efforts remind us all that small acts of kindness, like listening and making someone feel seen, can have a profound impact. Julie Baxter’s dedication, compassion, and humility embody the spirit of being “Stronger Together” in the Sedro-Woolley School District.

Physics in Action at SWHS!
On Tuesday, students in Mr. Zachary Pope’s Physics 111 class took their learning to the hallways, exploring circular motion with a hands-on bowling ball obstacle course. By carefully considering direction and speed, they visualized centripetal acceleration in action. The highlight of the day? Ethan DeJong set the fastest time—beating even Mr. Pope!
College Courses Offered Right on Campus
Physics 111 is just one of many college-level courses available at Sedro-Woolley High School through the College in the High School (CiHS) program. This program allows students to earn college credits without leaving the high school campus, offering a convenient and cost-effective alternative to Running Start.
Students in grades 9–12 can take accredited courses through partnerships with Skagit Valley College, Central Washington University, and the University of Washington—all while staying involved in extracurriculars and enjoying the full high school experience. Thanks to recent legislation, CiHS courses are now tuition-free, making higher education more accessible for families.
