Family Update
December 15, 2024
Greetings to you-
We are really excited to bring to you our first KINDNESS COUNTDOWN to Winter Break! Ms. Cooper has reminded us that doing something for others not only creates a more positive and supportive community, but also enriches our own lives! No matter how big or small, we all have the power to make a positive impact!
MONDAY- Make a handmade gift or card for one of your specialist teachers!
TUESDAY- Make a handmade gift or card for you bus driver or someone who helps you at the carloop or walker door!
WEDNESDAY- Draw a picture or write a note to one of our cafeteria team members!
THURSDAY- Write or draw a holiday card for a teacher or friend.
FRIDAY- Come up with a kindness activity with your family or friends to complete over break!
One of our favorite community events is about to hit the road! We hope you will be able to visit with us at one of the stops for our Jingle Bell Bus Tour this Wednesday! Be sure to check out locations and times below and remember, if you can't make one of the stops, our last stop is back at HHES around 5:30 and you are always welcome to visit us there for books, treats, and caroling!
THIRD GRADE FAMILIES: If your child has not returned money for music recorders, please send money to the office or use School Cash Online. Recorders are just $6 and students can select from their favorite colors: blue, red, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple or black!
Our annual Hat and Mitten Tree is located in the lobby. If students need a hat or gloves we direct them right to the tree. Also, if you are open to donating hats or gloves to the tree, please send them to the office. Thank you!
House Book Drive
Last month, Houses worked on projects to support our community. While some Houses made cards for our neighbors at the nursing home or thank you cards for first responders and veterans, other Houses are hosting different drives. The Ka'Mana House (House of the Empowered) are collecting books and magazines for the Elkton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center or the MRDC Elkton Early Head Start Family Education Center. Donations may be dropped off at HHES.
At Holly Hall, we prioritize regular and on time attendance for our students. If your student has missed 8 or more days by the end of the second marking period (January 28), regardless of the reason, they are flagged for a possible attendance concern. Upon our return from Winter Break, Mr. Rhoades and Mrs. Longeway will be scheduling parent conferences for students who are identified as "chronically absent." As determined by the state of Maryland, chronically absent is any student who is absent for more than 10% of the days while enrolled in school.
Cecil County Public Schools provides the following standard for regular attendance: "A student shall not be absent from school in excess of 16 days during the school year regardless of the reason." This includes doctor's notes, parent notes for illness and approved family vacation days. In addition, "Elementary and middle school students who are absent from school in excess of 16 days may fail the grade. If advanced to the next grade level, such student will be placed rather than promoted."
Please take a moment to review daily attendance data from last week, 12/9-12/13 on the infographic below. On average, we had 56 students who were either absent or tardy daily.
If you have questions or concerns about your child's attendance, please reach out to Mr. Rhoades at drrhoades@ccps.org or Mrs. Longeway at nilongeway@ccps.org.
Holiday Dinner Assistance
HHES will be able to prove a very limited number of families with assistance for Holiday dinner. Assistance will be granted on a first come, first serve basis. If your family is in need of Holiday dinner assistance, please complete the Google Form. Families will be notified directly by Mr. Rhoades if we are able to assist you with Holiday dinner. Email Mr. Rhoades at drrhoades@ccps.org if you have any questions.
