Note from the Health Office
I hope this message finds you well as we finally are starting to see some fall weather! I want to take a moment to share some guidelines regarding visits to the school nurse to ensure that our students receive the best care possible while remaining in the classroom as much as possible for their learning.
**Appropriate Times to Visit the School Nurse:**
1. For Emergencies: If a student experiences a sudden illness or injury, they should seek assistance immediately. Please remind your child to notify their teacher for urgent situations. Remember the “7 Bs:”
- Bleeding (lots) - Barfing - Breathing bad - Bee Sting
- Big Bump - Broken (injury) - Burning up
Please encourage your child to drink water throughout the day, as well as eat breakfast and lunch. A lot of the complaints that we see are related to hunger and/or thirst. Students will be encouraged by their teacher to attend to minor needs (paper cut, bug bites, hunger, thirst, old injuries that did not happen at school) in the classroom. Putting ice on an injury that is more than 24 hours old is not an appropriate treatment.
Please note- we do not have the following items in the health office and cannot administer anything without an order from a medical provider:
- any antibiotic ointments or creams for cuts/scrapes
- over the counter medications such as Tylenol or ibuprofen for aches/pains
2. Medication Needs: If your child requires medication during school hours, please ensure that the necessary forms are completed and submitted to the nurse in advance.
3. Routine Check-ups: For general health questions or concerns, we encourage parents to reach out to their child’s primary care physician. The school health office is not a primary care clinic.
As nurses, we cannot diagnose, only assess the situation and make care recommendations. By following these guidelines, we can help ensure that all students receive the timely care they need. Thank you for your cooperation!
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Becky Christensen, RN-BSN, PHN, LSN
