Inspire, Create and Grow a Community of Lifelong Learners
NEWS FROM MRS. HAZARD, PRINCIPAL
Warm greetings SRES Families!
As you know, we have been learning about the contributions of African Americans during Black History Month. Each morning during announcements I highlight an inventor, athlete, scientist, musician, etc. and teachers have been building new learning into their classrooms as you learned last week. Below are a few facts shared during morning announcements:
- Did you know the Super Soaker was invented by Lonnie Johnson (born in 1949)? And, that Mr. Johnson is also an aerospace engineer for NASA?
- Did you know Wilma Rudolf was crippled as a child yet she became the first African American woman to win three gold medals at the 1960 Olympics in Rome?
- Did you know that Ella Fitzgerald began her career at the age of 15 and was known as The First Lady of Song?
Next week is a great time to visit the Rockingham library and check out a new book; perhaps one that celebrates Black History month! There are so many wonderful children's books that tell the true experiences of slaves, people who lived during the Civil Rights Movement, segregation, and notable African Americans and their contributions. HERE is a list that will get you started!
Looking ahead:
- February 20-24: No School
- February 27th: School resumes
- February 28th: Last day of Winter Sports
I wish you all a wonderful February vacation!
Your partner in education,
Laura Hazard
