June 2025 Newsletter
A Message from the Principals
As we look ahead to June, there are several exciting year end events planned for the month. We encourage our students to continue to engage with their learning and be inspired by all the activities right until the end of June!
We will be having our annual school family picnic on June 26 this year. In the morning our students will participate in Summer Fun Day activities with their teachers. Parents are invited to join their children for a picnic lunch starting at 11:45. Parents will pick their children up from their classrooms. Be sure to bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on. In the event of rain we will picnic inside the school. This year we will be offering Santa Lucia pizza for families to eat at the picnic. You will be able to order through Munch a Lunch - please check your email for instructions for this.
The PAC has been busy organizing a basket raffle. Ticket sale information is below in the PAC section and the draws will be made around 1:00. We encourage all children to stay after the picnic and spend the afternoon with their teachers and friends. If you will be taking them home after the picnic you must sign them out at the office.
Report cards will be available on June 27 on the parent portal at noon. Thank you to all of you for continuing to support our school and staff. We really appreciate the learning partnership we have with each of you.

Class Placements
We are currently working on finalizing our class lists for the fall. This is a very involved process and includes balancing many, many different factors, including:
Balanced class composition
Social and behavioural considerations
Group dynamics
Learning styles
Parent input
Every year we get many parent requests - whether it be for a specific teacher or for certain friends to be in a class with their child. While we appreciate you advocating for your child, please also remember that we are placing over 400 students into classes for next year. This means that we cannot grant every request that we receive. We do our best to ensure that every student has a positive learning partner in their class - unfortunately we cannot always give everyone their first choice. Please note that the deadline for requests has passed and we will not consider any late requests at this point.
Given appropriate support at home and at school, it has been our experience that the vast majority of students experience success with the teacher they are placed with. Where a placement is proving to be difficult, we ask that parents and students give it the time required for friendships and classroom community building to develop.
Class placements will be included in your child's June report card. Early information about whether requests have or have not been granted will not be shared prior to this date, with the exception of students entering Kindergarten. Families of incoming Kindergarten students will be notified of their child's teacher and the days they will attend in mid-June.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to your child's education.
A Message from our Counsellor
As the school year comes to a close, I want to say how proud I am of all the growth, learning, and kindness shown this year. Our students have worked hard to understand their feelings, use calming strategies, and be great friends !
To families, thank you for your ongoing support. Your encouragement has helped your children build strong social and emotional skills.
I hope you all enjoy a restful, fun-filled summer and take time to play, breathe, and connect.
Warmly,
Rebecca Mackie

The Summer Slide
Water slides and playground slides are wonderful summer activities. A slide to avoid is the summer reading slide.
Developing good habits such as reading regularly before bed or journaling about daily activities can help children to maintain all the gains they’ve made in reading and writing throughout the school year. As with any developing skill, consistent practice is key. Even a little time on a regular basis can make a big difference in preventing students’ literacy skills from sliding backwards.
Have a wonderful summer!
News from PAC
Hello Woodlawn Families,
Your Friendly Neighborhood PAC here. We made it to June, just a few more weeks of school and then it's summer. I hope everyone is having a lovely spring, we have been loving the warm weather at our house.

Coming up this June with PAC is our final meeting on June 3rd at 11:55 in the library.
We are looking forward to our Annual Basket Raffle. What is the Annual Basket Raffle you ask, well let me tell you. Each class will be assigned a theme and families are welcome to donate items related to that theme. With those items, PAC builds gift baskets that you can try to win at the end of year picnic on June 26th. This year tickets for the raffle will be available for purchase on munch-a-lunch and the hour before the picnic. All the details for the raffle will be emailed out on June 2nd.

Supporting Transition and Change For Our Kids
Grow A Row
For nearly 20 years, Woodlawn students and their families have been involved in harvesting root vegetables for Southeast Helping Hands. We started with a Woodlawn Community Garden, and have since transitioned to inviting our families to donate from their own gardens, or to purchase and donate vegetables in the autumn. These vegetables have benefited families in need from our local community.
We are inviting Woodlawn students and their families to participate in our annual: Grow a Row for Those in Need gardening campaign. We are looking for root vegetables like: potatoes, carrots, onions, turnips, beets, pumpkins and squash.
Participating families are asked to bring their produce to Southeast Helping Hands in the autumn, located at 525 Main Street in Steinbach.
If you don’t plan on having a garden, but would still like to donate some root vegetables, your contribution is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your willingness to participate! We are excited to continue Woodlawn’s legacy of giving back to our local community and teaching children how to be generous, thoughtful, and caring citizens.

As parents you will need to supply the following:
- 1 pair of labeled indoor running shoes
- 1 labeled plastic water bottle
- 1 extra change of clothes (for accidents or if they fall outside in the mud/water)
- 1 labeled backpack
- 2 boxes of Kleenex
Some specific classes may ask for headphones that would be returned at the end of the year.
