Cahaba Students Learn from Local Artist, Mrs. Amy O'Brien
Cahaba Elementary School's Enrich Art/Set Design group enjoyed a visit from famous local artist, Amy O'Brien. She treated them to an art discussion about Plein Air Art. All students have been studying Art History on Claude Monet's En Plein Air Art and how it compares to our very own Trussville Heritage Days. Her visit brought the lesson to life and the experience was enjoyed by all! A Great Blue Heron joined in the discussion too and now appears in the painting.

Magnolia Fourth Graders Enjoy Poetry Activity
Students in Mrs. Holt's Language Arts classes at Magnolia recently brainstormed ideas to write poems based off Walt Whitman's "I Hear America Singing." In this poem, Whitman describes what he values about America: everyone working together, each with his or her own strengths. As a class, Mrs. Holt's students walked throughout the school and recorded the strengths of all members of the Magnolia family. Then, students used their notes to write unique and creative "I Hear Magnolia Singing" poems.

Dinosaurs, Megalodons, Fossils, OH MY!!!
This week Cahaba’s third graders had the distinct pleasure of welcoming Mrs. Karen Wood to our school. She taught us all about the different types of fossils and how they are created. Students were engaged with the variety of fossils and how very rare it is to find them. Each student was able to wear their Paleontologist hat for the day and examine each fossil with a magnifying glass. They observed fossils from dinosaurs, plants, sea creatures and even dinosaur eggs. She even brought in a fossil of a tree that was dug up while making the Memorial Park here in Trussville. Students were delighted by this opportunity and are really excited to start our fossil unit.
Magnolia's Yearbook Reveal
Magnolia's student-created yearbooks were recently distributed. The first yearbook reveal began with a preview party held for members of the fourth and fifth grade yearbook teams. During the preview party, Dr. Phyllis Faust, principal, presented the yearbook to the members of the team. Yearbook Team members enjoyed doughnuts while looking through the pages of the yearbook. Then, all students who pre-purchased yearbooks received their yearbooks and had a time to sign them in their classrooms.
"Trussville Pines Golf Course" STEM Project
Ms. Wilks' first grade class just completed a STEM unit on golf. They had the best time and incorporated many first grade standards. A brief overview of this learning opportunity included:
- Students tracked the scores from The Masters using a graph and tally marks
- Students sorted player’s names based on long and short vowel sounds
- Students designed and constructed their own golf course. (each student designed a hole to collectively make a complete course)
- Students used Flipgrid to be a commentator for their golf tournament
- Students wrote a descriptive piece about their golf course.
- Students measured shortest to longest putts.
- Students experimented with putting and how and why to “judge the landscape”
Such a neat project for our Paine first graders!!
