Mr. Mauck's Musings
This was a very busy week at JHS and we have several events yet to play out. On Monday and Wednesday JHS hosted an orientation night for all of our local 8th graders. The students got a tour of the school, met all the staff and learned about the opportunities at JHS. Congratulations to Brock Fleck and Mr. Shelton as our Student and Staff of the Week selections. Tonight our Girls Basketball team plays Princeton to see who will play for a sectional title on Saturday night. Our girls played a tough and gritty game against Vincennes to advance to tonight's game. The Girls Swimming and Diving team is looking to capture a sectional title on Saturday afternoon. They should be the favorites after a good night of swimming in Thursday's prelims. The Boys Wrestling team will follow up their second place finish in sectional with regional competition on Saturday. We had two individual winners and multiple regional qualifiers. The JHS Boys Bowling team made the cut to advance to State February 15th in Indy. 5 teams advance and we were tied with 4th and only 3 pins out of 3rd. Todd Dick was the only one to advance to State in individual competition on Sunday February 16th in Indy. Good luck to Todd and the rest of our bowlers. The band was busy with their solo and ensemble pieces last week. We had several individuals and groups qualify. Mrs. Henke is looking for students interested in participating in Unified Track and Field and should attend a call out meeting on Monday, February 10th during homeroom in Room 205. Our JAG program competed in Evansville today at our regional competition. Check out their picture and the results.
Levi Welp was awarded the Eddie Rottet Memorial Award and trophy which is the highest special award granted to local Scouts at the annual Boy Scout breakfast on 2/2/25. The award is given annually in recognition of outstanding character and achievements in Boy Scouts. Past recipients have excelled in academics and athletics, and community. Eddie Rottet was a 3 sport star athlete for Jasper High School and a Boy Scout who took over his troop when the scoutmaster passed. He got Jasper to the state basketball finals in 1934 and had a scholarship to Purdue or Northwestern that fall. Eddie was the first all-state player from JHS. Unfortunately he passed away due to typhoid fever, drinking from a contaminated well at the age of 17. The Boy Scouts give the award to one area senior because of the role model Eddie was with scouting character and achievements. There’s a display in the Dubois county museum of the trophy and the past recipients on the trophy.
Today the JHS Student Council hosted our Winter Pep Session. They recognized our students involved in winter activates, from sports to band to our theater productions. We had spirit games and contests. There were cheer block competitions, name that tune, air matrass relays, rock paper scissors, and guess the mascot contests. A huge shout out to Mrs. Ferguson and her spirit committee for one of the best pep sessions we have had. Our staff gathered in a section next to the students and competed along with the students.

Senior Portrait Submission Extended
Seniors!
You're so LUCKY... We've decided to extend the deadline for senior portraits to March 17th. (St. Patrick's day)
Here are the details again in case you forgot!
- Obviously, we will gladly use your school portrait if you feel it is acceptable.
- If you haven't scheduled photos yet, you can still get some great photos from our local professionals! There are many to choose from, and if you need recommendations, we do have a list of photographers we prefer to work with.
- If you or your family don't have the budget for portraits from someone on our preferred photographer list, there are other options out there too.
- Please, talk to me before trying to turn in photos from your phone or someone that just "has a nice camera". There are several amateur photographers we can send you to that would be glad to take nice senior photos for a very reasonable price or possibly free. Even some of our talented yearbook staff members might be able to help you.
Now for the details:
You need to choose up to 2 photos.
Talk to your photographer, they (most likely) were already sent a link to a submission website. If your photographer is from out of town, and/or did not get the private submission form in their email, please let me know so I can contact them directly. (We sent the link to almost 30 photographers though, so chances are they have it!)
If they provided you the photos to send us, that is ok at this point. However, if it is not a full-resolution file, I will ask you to contact them again.
-The first will be a vertical portrait used in the yearbook and media outlets such as The Herald.
It needs to be a professional-looking photo that is appropriate for school and public viewing. NO cars, trucks, pets, or other "props" should be used in this photo.
-The second will be a horizontal photo that is used on the big screen for our graduation ceremony. This photo can show a little more "personality" and is totally optional.
Both should be free of watermarks and have a large enough resolution for print, which is a big reason why your photographer should be submitting for you. Screenshots from your phone or photos saved from a photographer's website without permission ARE NOT AN OPTION.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid site is now open for Students and Parents to complete their applications for next year. Any student considering attending college should complete the FAFSA to be eligible for financial assistance. I would encourage all families to fill out a application regardless of need as many colleges require FAFSA completion for all types of assistance. Many schools require submission for competitive non-need based scholarships or grants. The application is much easier than in the past. Click on the link for more information and to complete your application. FAFSA
