Dear Buena Vista Parents,
I hope you are all doing well. Thank you to all of the parents who were able to make it to Back To School Night last night. We had a great turn out. I hope you all learned a lot about what your child will be learning this school year. We are off to a great start at Buena Vista. We had our first fire drill practice today and all of our students did a great job. We will have at least one emergency practice drill each month to make sure both staff and students are prepared for any situation.
Our PTA
If you have not joined our PTA yet, please consider doing so. It is only $15 to join and gives you voting power to help decide what community activities our PTA does and how we use our PTA money to support our students learning and growing. You will also get communication updates from them.
Student Learning
I have been able to visit some classrooms. I loved dropping into Mrs. Schoonmakers and seeing our young mathematician explore all the different math manipulatives that they would be using this school year. They used pattern blocks, geoboards, connecting cubes and more. Many of them were "amazing" Mrs. Schoonmaker with how high they could already count.
Mrs. Bockser's 5th grade class was already diving deep into social studies. They were researching different geographical areas in North America. I watched them work collaboratively and use their chromebooks and student notebooks to gather infomation. I can't wait to drop by again and see what they have discovered.
Mrs.Thompson's first grader were doing some early number corner practice when I dropped by. They were practicing counting and writing their numbers to 31. All of them were willing to try, even if it felt a little hard. They did a great job at showing growth mindset!
Drop-off and Pick-up
This is a gentle reminder that there is No Parent Parking in the Kindergarten Circle (also referred to as School Lane or Picnic Lane). This is a pick up and drop off zone only and all parents must stay with their car. If you would like to walk your child to class you can park on Buena Vista (on the street, please do not block driveways), in the Alvarado parking lot (the back gate is unlocked during drop off and pick-up), or on San Juan Ave. Thank you all for your cooperation on this.
School Safety
The safety of our students and staff always comes first so please remember that all visitors to school during the school day must check in and out of the front office. Access to the office is from the front door to the school only. If a student needs to contact their parent/guardian during the school day they must call from the front office. Please no phone calls/texting to or from parents using personal phones or watches during the school day. Phones and watches will need to be turned off and put in backpacks during the school day. Please also see the WCSD Mobile Communication Policy BP 5131.8.

Mobile Communication Devices
The latest research has revealed the growing concern and detrimental impacts of social media on our children. To minimize distractions and promote a focused learning environment, we will be enforcing our district cell phone/watches/earbuds/ mobile /technology - BP 5131.8: Mobile Communication Devices. Beginning this school year, when students enter class, all phones, smartwatches and earbuds must be turned off and placed in backpacks. Our goal is to have a school day in which students spend their time interacting with their peers and teachers in real time. Our Governing Board, Superintendent and our administrative team are committed to an inclusive process and equitable implementation that will begin by engaging our community in conversation.

A Great Education Starts With A Strong Foundation
Our school is fortunate to have two non-profit, parent-volunteer led organizations to support our students: PTA/PTO and WCEF TK-12. Both have distinct missions and are critical to creating great schools and supportive communities. To learn more, check out this video from Back to School Night.
For 40 years, WCEF has partnered with both the WCSD and Las Lomas to help bridge the gap between state funding and the actual needs of our students. This year, our goal is to raise $1.6 million for the Walnut Creek School District and Las Lomas High School. These funds will support enriching programs like Art, Science, and Music; provide academic and social-emotional resources; maintain smaller class sizes; and keep libraries open. Every dollar matters. Every student benefits.
