New Staff Spotlight
Mrs. Guler
Mrs. Guler received her Bachelors in Science for K-8 Education from Grand Canyon University in Arizona and is currently working towards her Masters degree in Technology for Education. She was raised in the Longview/Kelso area and is passionate about preparing and educating the next generation of Longview to be successful in school and beyond! She is teaching 6th and 7th grade science and is excited to be at Monticello!
Mrs. Cowell
Mrs. Cowell was born in Michigan and has lived in many states. Having attended California State University in Hayward, she earned her BA in Liberal Studies and Foreign Languages then set off to a career in hotel management. Because she always longed to be a teacher, Mrs. Cowell went back to school to earn her Master of Arts in Teaching at Willamette University. Along the way she has volunteered for the Boys & Girls Club, but is most proud of her 13 years leading Girl Scouts. She likes to travel (and takes students abroad) and to ski on Mt. Hood. Mrs. Cowelllooks forward to helping make a difference in the lives of the students at Monticello Middle School.
Student Connectedness Survey Results
One of our main goals this year is to strengthen student connections at Monticello. We want every student to feel safe, supported, and valued while at school. It’s important to us that each student has at least one trusted staff member they can turn to for guidance or to discuss personal matters, whether it’s related to school, friends, sports, or other activities. This fall, we surveyed students to understand what percentage feel they have a trusted adult at Monticello. Throughout the year, our staff will focus on fostering these trusting relationships to ensure all students feel secure and supported. We will conduct another survey in the spring to assess our progress towards our goal of reaching all students. The results of our fall survey show that 85.7% of our students feel they have a connection with at least one staff member at Monticello.

Students of the Month
October
Positive Behavior Office Referrals
In an effort to help students feel more connected and reduce the number of discipline referrals, our staff is constantly looking for students who are making positive choices. Teachers and staff members are committed to reinforcing behaviors like being responsible, respectful, safe, and engaged as learners. Our goal is to minimize discipline referrals while fostering a positive, supportive culture throughout our school. When a staff member observes a student demonstrating a positive character traits they are given a Positive Behavior Referral. This includes a note of recognition from their teacher and additional acknowledgement from the principal. Below are some pictures of students who have received Positive Referrals this past month.

PBIS Incentive November
- Be Responsible
- Be Respectful
- Be Safe
- Be A Learner
We are a PBIS school which means we try to reinforce positive behaviors. We will be holding a school assembly on November 27th for students that exhibit the 4Bs and do not receive a major office referral during the month of November. During the assembly, the volleyball team will play the football team in a game of volleyball. The winner will play against our staff. There will be other activities as well. It is a fun event before the break.

Educational Benefits Program
Families Encouraged to Complete the Application
Please support your family and our school by completing the Educational Benefits Application.
WHY COMPLETE THE APPLICATION?
SUN Bucks Benefits: By completing the survey, your family may qualify for SUN Bucks. This program provides eligible families with $120 per child to purchase groceries over the summer months. The Educational Benefits Application is the simplest way to ensure your family receives these benefits!
Other Benefits for Families: Completing the Educational Benefits Application may qualify your household for additional assistance. Some of these programs include before and after school academic and enrichment programs, fee waivers for college applications, admission tests, and extracurricular activity fees. Others include low-cost internet, scholarships, and many other great benefits.
Additional School Funding: The information collected from the Educational Benefits Application helps our school receive important state and federal funding. This funding supports numerous educational programs and resources that benefit every student.
Each family's information is completely confidential. The data collected will only be used for determining your eligibility for assistance programs and securing essential funding for our school. If you need help completing the form, please reach out to our school liaison. The forms are attached below in English and Spanish.

Monticello PTO News
From President Heather Peterson-Woodruff:
I hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather. We are currently running concessions for boys' basketball and wrestling. If you have a half hour or more to spare, please let me know. We are serving hot dogs, cheese nachos, and Cup a Noodle soup out of the concession stand. Thank you, Tracy, for arranging the inspection with the Health Department. We passed with flying colors. If you plan to work in the concession stand, it would be a good idea to obtain your food handler's card. You can find this on the Health Department website and there is a ten-dollar fee. The Family Bingo Night is Wednesday November 13, 2024 6:00-7:30 p.m. I know a few of you have offered to volunteer. Please come around 5:45 p.m. The PTO will be providing some refreshments at this event. Popcorn Day will be on Friday November 22 this month due to the holiday break. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please feel free to email me. Please enjoy this reflection on volunteering and have a great week.
