Central Michigan University

We are coming to a point in our lives where a lot of very important decisions need to be made, particularly what we will do after high school. Will we go to college? If so, what university is the best fit for each of us? This decision has to be based on many factors such as financial aspects, social aspects, and mainly career aspirations. This task seems very overwhelming, but by contacting several college admission representatives and being able to have an open line of communication with them through the senior seminar class, we can better determine what will be the right fit for us when it comes time to choose our path.
On September 11, we were given the opportunity to speak with a representative from Central Michigan University, Matthew Warren. CMU is a college many of us are planning to apply to, due to the distance from home, campus life, and opportunity for scholarships. Though it is on many of our lists, most people don’t know that much about the university itself and what it has to offer prospective students. After listening to what Matthew Warren, our class seemed more intrigued about Central Michigan University. He told us about Central’s different areas of interest, such as sports, clubs, organizations, on-campus amenities, including the gym and career guidance options. He also went more in-depth about what majors the university offers, ranging from business to social sciences, to careers in education.
We discussed the potential scholarship options available, for students who have taken the SAT or ACT, as well as for those who have not, due to COVID related delays. This really piqued my interest in the school, as it shows that they are attempting to adapt to the struggles and obstacles that have been in the way for most of the senior class over this last year. I found that his visit, though over zoom call, was very beneficial to not only my decision to apply but also to my overall knowledge of the school itself, which definitely made it one of my top choices. I am rather excited about applying, and hopefully being accepted by Central Michigan University, and potentially furthering my education at this institution.
St. Clair County Community College

This week's college speaker was a representative from Saint Clair County Community College, otherwise known as SC4. The woman's name was Jeanne Palmateer, and she understood and answered all of my questions and concerns. She went to SC4 for two years to save money on her college education in total. A lot of what she preached to us was about finances. Probably because that is what the point of community colleges is, saving money! However, she also provided us with a lot of fun information about the college community itself.
One component of SC4 I really found interesting was their location. Their campus is absolutely beautiful. They are right by the water and a river actually flows through the campus itself. There's a fun bridge, and lights going from building to building. If you've ever been to Fremont Street in Las Vegas, it feels very similar to that. The way the buildings are set up feels more like a funky town in Detroit rather than an education center. It takes away the school-ey feel from school, while you still earn a wonderful education!
I personally have visited SC4 for sports purposes, and their active facilities are very nice. In fact, SC4 has been ranked as the #1 community college in Michigan for having the best facilities for sports. Most community colleges have lacking sports teams, but not SC4. I have played against many girls who went to SC4 for volleyball and they were all amazing!
For a small community college, SC4 has many fun activities and programs they offer to students. There are educational programs and then those for the purpose of enjoyment. Tutoring is one cool component of the educational programs. Going to college is challenging and having a source to help you is very reassuring. SC4 offers many fun clubs, but my personal favorite is their intramural sports teams. Many community colleges don’t offer these so I think it’s super fun that they do!
After hearing all of the cool components SC4 has to offer, I think it’d be a super fun place to go to college for two years, not only save some money (because who doesn’t love that) but also to have a blast with all of the amusing clubs and activities they provide!
