Letter from the Principal
Hello EMS Families and Caregivers!
This is our last newsletter of the school year. Thank you all SO MUCH for everything you have done to make Edmunds Middle School the incredible, unique, magical community that it is. I witnessed so much growth this year, students stretching themselves beyond what they ever thought themselves capable of, achieving things individually and collectively that are already becoming part of the stories of who they are as young people and learners, stories that will stay with them as they grow through adolescence and beyond.
That is really the magic of this age. I love middle school so much because these students are still just starting to write the stories of who they are. The story of someone who achieves something that seemed impossible is a powerful one. It’s a story that stays with a person. How many more successes will be written because of the work that happened this year? How much will our community, our world, be shifted across the balance of our students’ lifetimes by the fact that they know how to persevere through challenge, to adapt and learn and grow into who they are and need to be? The legacy of this year’s work is unknowable. But it’s moments like these, at the close of the year, that you can feel it in your heart if you stop for long enough to let the chaos settle and the light shine in.
Take a moment and feel it. This is why we keep showing up. This is why, year after year, we choose this work. None of it would be possible without you and the support and engagement you offer your children.
I also want to take this moment to share a difficult piece of news and make a request of our entire community. After the onset of sudden and severe symptoms last week, EMS 8th grader Niko Chernyshov was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following a successful emergency procedure, Niko is recovering, and he and his family are preparing for a long road to recovery. This will involve travel to Boston to receive intensive treatment. Family and friends have started a Go Fund Me page to raise money to support Niko’s treatment and the family’s travel needs. Please consider donating to the fund here.
Events like this can bring up challenging feelings in all of us. If you or your children are struggling with strong or overwhelming thoughts or emotions connected to this hard news, please reach out to me or our School Counselors, Pat Hulbert (phulbert@bsdvt.org) and Brady Lozier (klozier@bsdvt.org).
I want to thank our incredible faculty and staff for their unwavering dedication, their talent and skill, their passion and creativity and their care. The way they show up for your children every day of the year makes me so proud to serve them.
I want to thank our amazing PTO, especially this year’s PTO leadership: Kerrie Mathes, Beckie Taylor, Connie Coleman, and Vanessa Berman. Their constant support for our school and our teachers was inspiring. They are the reason we had school dances this year. They are the reason we were able to host a Volunteer Orientation evening and have dozens of new volunteers efficiently moved through the volunteer background check process. They kept our teachers fed and hosted a community forum on school safety. I cannot say enough about the positive impact of their efforts on our entire community.
And I want to thank the Edmunds Family Advisory Group, a group of parents and caregivers who met with me monthly to discuss topics relevant to the operations and future of EMS. They offered invaluable perspective, counsel, and partnership. I look forward to continuing our work together next year.
It takes people, and the connections between them, to turn a school into a home. Thank you to all of you, for doing what you do and being who you are, as we all worked together this year in service of your childrens’ growth and success.

EMS Community Announcments
Beginning in January this year, a team of youth from Edmunds Middle School formed a Restorative Practices team, with a goal of making positive change in the school community. The group was recruited by Restorative Practices Specialist Simon Parlante, and facilitated by Program Directors from UP for Learning and four Burlington High School students, as well as one student from Winooski High School.
Over their four retreats, the team participated in community building activities and games, explored their identities and leadership styles, and learned about restorative approaches to discipline. They also discussed the root causes of peer-to-peer conflict at Edmunds, and advised Interim Principal John Oliver on his design of the lunch period next year to incorporate more flexibility in where students can be. They also took part in a “dotmocracy” protocol, where they voted on what area of school they wanted to take action on. Out of several topics, the team decided to take action on the Blue Form Policy, addressing concerns they have over the equity and consistency of its implementation. As a group, they brainstormed questions for a circle dialogue about the policy, and invited Athletic Directors Quaron Pinckney and Ryan Hayes to attend. Some of the questions included, “Does the Blue Form policy impact your behavior and performance in classes?” “What are some of the strengths and challenges of this policy?” and, “How can we get teachers to be more consistent with the Blue Form Policy if it stays the same?”
During their final retreat, the team participated in this dialogue, and the result was a thoughtful and respectful discussion of the policy and how it can be improved. As a possible next step, members of the group are considering joining Q and Ryan to speak to the faculty during opening meetings at the start of the 2024-2025 school year, sharing their experiences and working together to make a policy that works for everyone. Over the past five months, the group did a great job of building community, brainstorming action projects, and advocating for change!
Counselor's Corner
Transition season is upon us! The school counselors are working hard to help our 5th graders transition to EMS and our 8th graders transition to high school! For the 5th to 6th grade transition: we are collaborating with the elementary schools, working with families and having fun connecting with new students. Students have been on multiple tours of our school, spoken with panels of students and gotten to meet the 6th grade and exploratory teams. Our awesome Chorus, Orchestra and Band performed for the 5th graders and were a huge hit!
