Oh The Places You'll Go! But...No More Parent/Guardian Requests for Memory Books to be Signed By Staff
Each grade level class has about 320 students, and during the course of middle school, our students have upwards of 20+ teaching staff, plus support staff, counselors, admin, coaches, advisors which equals up to a lot of contacts by the time your child leaves middle school. At DMS we will no longer accept requests for memory books or memory projects to be signed or completed by our staff. We understand this may be disappointing, but with the increase in volume of these requests in the past years and the additional responsiblity it puts on our office staff to ensure the books/projects all get signed and returned becomes too much. Also, we would feel terrible if it was lost, so therefore, these requests will no longer be honored. Thank you for your understanding.
Future Eagles Expo!
On Thursday, April 18th, we hosted the 5th-6th grade "Future Eagles Expo" welcoming the incoming 6th grade students and their parents/guardians to Discovery in anticipation of the 24-25 school year. If you missed the opportunity to be here, the presentation that was shown is posted here and on our website.
The Scoop on Lunch Detention
When any type of "detention" is given as a consequence for not following the Guidelines for Success at DMS, students are clearly communicated to as well as parents/guardians. This may be one or both of the following to parents/guardians: a phone call and/or an email. This amongst many other things is why it is so important to keep your contact information in Powerschool current. If you haven't looked at Powerschool for awhile, please check it out and update any information that is not current.
We wanted to inform you that your child served lunch detention today due to not following the Guidelines for Success in the lunchroom at Discovery Middle School. Lunch detention occurs for a variety of reasons.
Some of the reasons are:
- Disruptive behavior during lunch
- Not sitting in assigned seats
- Throwing goods during lunch
- Other Violations of the Guidelines for Success
Lunch detention is held in one of two locations during the student's lunchtime. One location is in our Music Wing at assigned tables and the front office. While your child is in one of those locations, they are supervised by Discovery Staff while they eat quietly. Additionally, your child will reflect on the choices that placed them in lunch detention in hopes of reducing these kinds of unwanted behaviors.

How We Empower Our Students on IEPs (Individualized Education Plans)
Our SPED casemangers have different ways of teaching our students about their disability category, their IEP and how to grow as self-advocates. In this particular classroom, a pre-post IEP quiz is given to students. Questions such as:
- What does IEP stand for?
- List 3 things that are in an IEP.
- What is a disability?
- The disability I have is...
- ______is the next time my IEP team will meet.
- One goal that I am working on in my IEP is...
- Some accomodations and modifications in my plan are:

End of Year 8th Grade Celebration
The 8th grade celebration will be held on Thursday, May 30th at 2:30. The gymnasium doors will open at 2:15 for families. The presentation will be about 45 minutes long and will be followed by a "clap out", where the 8th graders do one final loop around the school and then exit through a tunnel of parents clapping & cheering.

Self-Directed Academy Registration
Self-Directed Academy Registration
Registration for the Fargo Public Schools Self-Directed Academy, opening next fall for students in Grades 6-8, is now open.
The Self-Directed Academy puts each student in the driver's seat of their own education. With an instructional model built on self-paced learning, flexible scheduling, technology integration, STEM focus, and project-based learning, students determine their own educational path with guidance from educators serving as learning mentors who understand their needs and tailor supports to each individual. The Self-Directed Academy is best-suited for independent learners who benefit from in-person contact.
The Self-Directed Academy will be housed at the Agassiz Building with bussing available for all students from their home middle school. Visit the Self-Directed Academy webpage to learn more about the Self-Directed Academy.
Kindergarten Registration
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Kindergarten Registration for Fall 2024 is open online at www.fargo.k12.nd.us/registration. Your child must be age 5 by July 31, 2024 to attend school in the fall.
Registration is a two-step process:
STEP ONE: REGISTER ONLINE
Complete online registration forms at www.fargo.k12.nd.us/registration. For assistance, please contact your child’s school to schedule an appointment to complete in-person.
STEP TWO: SUBMIT DOCUMENTATION
Upload or bring the following documents to your child’s school by August 27 to finalize registration.
- Child’s certified birth certificate
- Child’s immunization record with 5-year shots
- Document (i.e. current city utility bill and bank statement) that includes parent/guardian name and current address for verification

FPS Early Childhood Special Education Program
ECSE Community Friends
Fargo Public Schools' Early Childhood Special Education program is seeking Community Friends to join its preschool classrooms for the afternoon sessions. Community Friends are typically developing peers who will join the ECSE classrooms alongside the students with developmental delays or disabilities. Students must be 4 years old by July 31 and pass a developmental screening to be eligible for the program. The program is free of charge for families, but parents must provide transportation. The ECSE afternoon sessions are held from 12:10-2:40 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday through May 30. Click here to apply for the ECSE Community Friends program.

6th Grade Track & Field

7th Grade Football (NEW)
Starting Fall 2024 all FPS middle schools will be offering 7th grade football! We are excited for our 7th graders to join the FM League and compete against Ben Franklin, Carl Ben Eielson, all 3 of the West Fargo middle schools, Horizon (Moorhead) middle school, and Sacred Heart middle school. We know other leagues have registration deadlines, so we wanted to get word out ASAP. Like all of our other 7th & 8th grade sports, 7th grade football will be affiliated with NDHSAA and follow their guidelines. This means that students can NOT participate in 2 different football leagues simultaneously.
Remember, you can always check out the Discovery Activities Calendar to find updates and other events happening in the near future.
Eligibility Update for Semester 2:
All 3 FPS middle schools will be using the "projected letter grade" to determine eligibility. Specifically, if a student's projected letter grade is an "F," the teacher will adjust their overall course grade to a "U." In addition to this, teachers now have the option to consider one of our Guidelines for Success, specifically "Be Responsible," in determining the overall course grade. If a student is earning a “R” for “Be Responsible”, the teacher will change the overall course grade to a “U” – regardless of the “projected letter grade”. A student will earn an "R" (Rarely) in their Responsibility grade if they are completing and turning in less than half of their daily assignments.
If a student can show progress and get their "projected letter grade" and/or their "Be Responsible" grade up, they can regain their eligibility at that time. All 3 middle schools will be in alignment with this criteria.

- Drama Club Meetings are posted on the Discovery Online Calendar
- Art Club: Meets on Thursdays after school from 3:35 - 4:30.
- Learning Lab: The Learning Lab (room 135) is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings as well as Monday and Thursday during DT.
- Pokemon Club: Meets on Thursdays after school in Mr. Krieger's classroom until 4:10.
- Chess Club: Wednesday mornings from 8:00 - 8:35 in the library.
- Improv Club: Every other Thursday after school. Talk to Mr. Moilanen for more details.

Discovery PTA Newsletter-April 2024 Edition!
It’s the last month of school and it’s been a great year! We’ve got some exciting things still to come!
General Membership Meetings
We typically meet the third Monday of each month. Exact dates can be found in the school’s online calendar and our Facebook group. Meetings start at 6:30 p.m. in the main office conference room and via Teams. The Facebook event has a Teams link, meeting ID and passcode for each meeting.
Our final meeting of the year will be on May 20 at 6:30 p.m. We’ll be celebrating the end of a successful year!
Staff Appreciation
One of the PTA’s favorite activities is staff appreciation at Discovery. We are working on a special week of surprises May 6-10 to show our appreciation to those who make a difference day in and day out at school.
Cultural Night Event
Cultural Night is returned to Discovery and it was a great night of showcasing all the cultures featured at our school. Those attending were able to sample foods from around the world, enjoy a variety of live performances, participate in hands-on craft activities and more.
THANK YOU SPRING FLING VOLUNTEERS!
PTA is shouting our thanks to the volunteers who gave their time on a Friday afternoon and evening to make the inaugural Spring Fling a great success! We had well over 400 students attend the event and they had a blast.

Eagle Expo was a success! We got to share information about joining the PTA with lots of new families and incoming 6th graders were greeted by not one, but two Eagles!

What's Happening at Discovery!
Decomposing in Math!
Students used tracing paper (very vintage) to rearrange/decompose both simple and complex shapes in Mrs. Brandt's math class. The students worked in groups to problem solve and often came up with multiple ways to solve the problem. Growth Mindset at work!

Attention 7th Grade Parents:
On Friday, May 3, the entire 7th grade class attended Career on Wheels at the Fargodome. The students left Discovery at 9:00 am and returned around 12:00 pm.
Careers on Wheels is an opportunity for our students to participate in career exploration that occurs outside an office setting (careers that require wheels). The purpose of this event is to promote and explore careers represented in one of the sixteen North Dakota Career Clusters and supported by our Career & Technical Education curriculums.

Restorative Practices with Mrs. Tackling
Summer plans: Consuming versus Creating
As we wrap up the school year, students may be excited about the lack of schedule for the summer months. While it is important to have down time, it is easy for students to fall into a consuming mindset without a schedule to keep them on track. Today’s social culture is built around consuming: consuming material goods, consuming media, and consuming other’s ideas. This summer, encourage your student to set goals: set a physical goal such as walking each day, set an academic goal like going to the library, and set a health goal such as reducing screen time. Encourage your student to create, not consume. What does that mean? It means your student will create something original, spark creativity and curiosity, and find joy with a new or existing hobby or activity. This will look different for each student, depending on their interests. Going on vacation? Have your student be the photographer of the trip. Going to summer camp? Have your student bring a book to read. Going on a road trip? Have your student create the playlist, mark a paper map or digital one with your progress, and suggest places to stop along the way.
Use the following questions to kick off a conversation with your student about their summer goals. Letting them choose their own goals based off their interests will motivate them more than a parent-initiated schedule of demands.
- 1. How do you want a typical summer day to look for you?
a. (if they say all day video games, express realistic expectations and boundaries)
2. What is important to you this summer?
- 3. What is your academic goal?
a. Plan to help your student with this goal (ex: 20 minutes of reading or writing in a journal that gives you a prompt)
- 4. What is your physical health goal?
a. Swimming, running, learning to play pickleball with your child or shooting hoops can be great things to do together as a family
- 5. What is your mental health goal?
a. This can look like a daily walk, journal, being social with friends, checking in with a counselor, or a weekly fun date with a parent or family member
- 6. What is one new thing/hobby you would like to learn?
a. Encourage creativity here – photography, drawing, becoming a student lifeguard or preschool assistant, watercolors, music, chess, writing short stories, sewing, making puzzles, learning a new language or sport, anything goes!
Enjoy a wonderful mix of summer fun and self-improvement and don’t forget to have your student turn in their electronics each night for good quality sleep. Parents - boundaries and expectations are important to communicate to your child. Students - make this summer the summer of creating, not consuming!
Student Resource Officer Corner with Officer Noll
Summer is on its way, and it time to get outside! Many students have started to ride their bikes to school which is a great way to start the day! Throughout the summer I’m sure many of your students will be riding their bikes and it is important to remember bike safety and the rules of the road. The City Of Fargo’s municipal code outlines that traffic laws also apply to those on bicycles.
Fargo Code: 8-1410. - Traffic laws apply to persons riding bicycles.
Fargo Code: 8-1419. - Lamps and other equipment on bicycles.
A. Every bicycle when in use between one-half hour after sunset and one-half hour before sunrise shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front; and with a red reflector of at least two square inches on the rear, of a type which shall be visible from all distances from 50 to 500 feet to the rear when directly in front of a lawful upper beam of headlamps of a motor vehicle. A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector. Reflectors or reflectorized material shall also be attached to the handlebars and front fork to reflect light emitted by lawful headlamps of a motor vehicle. Said material shall be white or silver in color.
Fargo Code: 8-1418. - Riding on sidewalks.
A. No person shall ride a bicycle upon any skyway.
B. Whenever any person is riding a bicycle upon a sidewalk, he shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give audible signal before overtaking and passing any pedestrian.
C. No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk which is posted with signs prohibiting bicycles;
Mr. Reinke's Realm-" Careers on Wheels"
Discovery Middle School 7th graders participated in the "Careers on Wheels" event last Friday at the Fargo Dome. This unique event focused on careers that utilize vehicles based outside traditional office environments. During the event, students explored various large work vehicles and learned about the different professions that use them.
At each of the thirty-five participating stations, students spent about 5-7 minutes listening to brief career overviews from business representatives and engaging in Q&A sessions. They inquired about the necessary education and training, required skills, typical salary ranges, work schedules, favorite and least favorite job aspects, and how each displayed vehicle was integral to the corresponding job. Several business partners also provided hands-on activities or demonstrations.
To enhance their learning experience, students prepared for this event through related classroom activities and completed follow-up assignments afterward. The aim was to expose students to a wide array of career possibilities, help them explore potential educational paths, and introduce them to various career sectors as defined by 11 of the 16 North Dakota Career Clusters.

PARENT/FAMILY ACCOMODATIONS
Family support is so important for your child’s success at Discovery. If parents or other family members need accommodations to participate and attend any school function at Discovery, please contact the school office two to three business days prior to the event. Every effort will be made to meet your needs.
PARENTAL/FAMILY COMMUNICATION
Communicating with parents and families is always our goal at Discovery Middle School.
You may subscribe to Discovery’ Newsletter and Daily Announcements on our website by going to “Content E-Alerts” on Discovery’s website. Parents/guardians can sign up to receive alerts about new Daily Announcements, Newsletters, etc., for each school your students attend. E-Alerts are sent to users who have subscribed to a homepage or website section of interest. You will receive an email notification that content has been modified.
You may also want to add our school calendar to your personal calendar. This will help you stay informed about all the activities that are happening at Discovery.

YEARBOOKS
Yearbook orders will be taken online .The cost is $22.00. To ensure that your child will receive a yearbook at the end of the year, it must be ordered and paid for in advance. The deadline for ordering a yearbook is Thursday, March 28th
Liz’s Closet
A Discreet, Free Resource for Discovery Students in Need
What: Discovery strives as a team to meet the needs of all students as part of our mission to build a foundation for success. Liz’s Closet, a free resource at Discovery, aligns with this mission by providing students in need with items such as clothing, hygiene products, non-perishable food items, etc.
At Discovery, we hope to provide developmentally appropriate support to students in need by offering a means to obtain basic food and hygiene products in a discreet manner. Students utilizing Liz’s Closet will have access to reusable bags, so items are less visible as students are leaving the building.
Where: Liz’s Closet will be located in Student Services. The room being used as “Liz’s Closet” will be accessible through a trusted adult in the building (teachers, counselors, administrators, paraprofessionals, designated staff).
Who: Any student in need of these items is welcome to take what he/she needs with the help of a trusted adult.
How: Although students are welcome to directly ask a trusted adult at Discovery to use Liz’s Closet, to maintain privacy as best as possible, a student can simply draw a star on a sheet of paper and bring it to a trusted adult. The adult will then instruct the student as to when he/she can go to Student Services to collect what is needed. If this adult does not have a time that works for him/her, the adult will notify the appropriate counselor or Student Services staff member to be expecting this student sometime within the school day. Once in Student Services, the student will be escorted to the closet and can take what is needed.
If you know of anyone who may need to utilize this resource, please do not hesitate to contact a Discovery counselor or administrator. Additionally, if you would like to donate shelf-stable food, school supplies, or hygiene products to Liz’s Closet, please contact Taylor Ferderer (school counselor) at 446-3318.
