My name is Anna Ricks, a Sinixt Tribal member from the Colville Reservation, and I am honored to serve as the State Board of Education’s Tribal Liaison. My role is to ensure your voices and perspectives shape the decisions on Washington's Education policy.
One of the first things I am excited to work on is sharing information and promoting community engagement about the Board’s upcoming work to modernize high school graduation requirements.
The initiative, called Future Ready, is unlike any update the State has made before. It focuses on gathering input from local communities from across the State. There is extra emphasis on including the voices of students, families, and communities who have historically been underserved by the education system. Click this link to learn more about the initiative.
How Can You Get Involved?
We need your insight to make this initiative a success. Your lived experiences and perspectives will help inform our recommendations and proposals. There are several ways you can get involved:
- Stay Connected: Sign up for the Board’s FutureReady newsletter to receive announcements about opportunities for community input, engagement, and informational sessions.
- Let Us Know: Click this link to an interest form, that will help us tailor opportunities to your interests and expertise.
- Partner with Us: We are seeking partnerships with Tribal communities. If your community is interested in partnering, I am excited to collaborate and learn more about how we can work together.
If you have any questions or ideas to share, I encourage you to reach out to me directly at anna.ricks@k12.wa.us. I look forward to partnering with you on this important journey.
Thank you for your time, your voice, and your commitment to supporting student success in Washington.
Warmly,
Anna

Hello Tribal Leader,
Tdohasan Chastang Sunray ah khaun. Khoiye gaw Ponca gaw MOWA Chahta kxai hehn ah daw. My name is Tdohasan Chastang Sunray and I am an enrolled Kiowa with further family lineage from the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma and MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians. I would love to volunteer this summer with your tribe. Currently, I am 19 years old, a Matelich full merit scholarship recipient, English/Creative Writing major, and NCAA track athlete at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. Academically, I have been able to maintain straight A’s as a first year college student, and athletically, I participated in our conference championships in track. Foundational pieces of my life include my close relationships with my family members, involvement in church, membership with the Kiowa Gourd Clan, upbringing, learning my tribal languages, and living a drug and alcohol-free life. As I mentioned, I am an English/Creative Writing major. I would love an opportunity to volunteer my time speaking, presenting, and running creative writing workshops with your tribal youth at one of your upcoming Native youth summer programs while I am off from college during the summer. Creative writing is one of my passions. I have experience in the field of volunteerism, as I spent last summer volunteering my time with tribal communities where I led youth basketball camps and clinics. If you need a speaker/presenter who is invested in empowering tribal youth through writing, reading, culture, and tradition, please get in touch with me right away so I can get you on my summer calendar. I will have a current criminal record check available to share with your programs to ensure that all possible program requirements are met. Attached, you will find two videos from the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute—an intensive two-week long interdisciplinary arts camp—that I was fortunate to have attended for three years for the Creative Writing discipline. The videos provide some insight into what these workshops will look like as well as one of the readings of a poem of mine. Also attached is a copy of my resume and photos with tribal youth from this past summer’s volunteerism. Looking forward to your response. Aho!
Sincerely,
Tdohasan
We are thrilled to announce the 21st National Native American Youth Initiative (NNAYI), a transformative summer program designed to inspire and prepare American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) high school students (16-18 years of age) to pursue careers in health professions and biomedical research.
Program Details:
· Dates: June 21 – June 29, 2025
· Location: Washington, D.C. hosted at Howard University
· Application Deadline: Tuesday, April 11, 2025 (Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed.)
· Application available on the AAIP website (aaip.org)
NNAYI, funded by the Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP) and the Front Line Indigenous Partnership (FLIP) program, offers students an incredible opportunity to:
· Engage in lectures, interactive workshops, and field trips.
· Learn about health professions, college and medical school admissions, and financial aid resources.
· Explore healthcare issues impacting AI/AN communities.
· Connect with AI/AN health professionals and establish mentorships with AAIP member physicians.
This intensive program provides the tools, knowledge, and inspiration students need to remain in the academic pipeline and achieve their dreams in healthcare and biomedical research.
Please help us spread the word to students and families in your community and encourage them to apply.
We look forward to welcoming the next generation of AI/AN healthcare leaders!

We invite you to send your students to the Mt. Sky Native American Leadership Camp, a transformative experience designed to empower Native youth with leadership skills, cultural pride, and a deeper connection to their community.
At Mt. Sky, high school students participate in a nationally recognized, culturally responsive curriculum that fosters team building, communication, creative thinking, and resiliency. Guided by dedicated educators, counselors, administrators, professionals, and college-age mentors, students will engage in hands-on learning that strengthens both their leadership abilities and personal growth.
Why Mt. Sky?
Our story began with a vision—to unite the Native youth of Washington and bridge the gaps between tribes. Through the wisdom of elders, the power of nature, and the strength of their voices, students develop a stronger sense of identity, confidence, and community impact.
Students (emerging and established leaders) leave camp feeling empowered and equipped to succeed in all areas of life. Many experience an increase in self-esteem, future aspirations, and the ability to make positive choices. No prior leadership experience is necessary—Mt. Sky is for all Native American youth who are ready to embrace their potential.
Five Reasons to Attend Mt. Sky Leadership Camp:
Learn leadership and life skills from elders
Discover and apply your voice
Embrace your pride and uniqueness
Connect with nature
Bridge the gap between tribes
Mt. Sky High School Leadership Camp will take place March 21st – 24th, 2025 at the Cispus Learning Center in Randle, WA.
We would love for your school to encourage Native students to take part in this incredible experience. Please let us know if you have any questions or need further details on how to register students.
We look forward to welcoming your students to Mt. Sky Leadership Camp!
