MESA program starts in four district schools
Mazama High School teacher Laura Nickerson has worked with Oregon Tech on STEM&M outreach for years and helped with the MESA program expansion. “MESA is an excellent opportunity for middle and high school students to envision their future in college,” she said. “Working with Oregon Tech students gives our students access to a mentor that can answer questions and guide them into selecting career paths.”
Dinner party with a twist: Check out Henley’s fall play
Drama Club to perform ‘How to Host Murder Mystery Dinner Party’ Nov. 10, 12, 13
It’s a night for mystery, drama, and maybe even a murder.
The Henley High School Drama Club will perform its fall play, “How to Host a Murder Mystery Dinner Party,” next week.
Opening night is Wednesday, Nov. 10. Performances follow on Friday, Nov. 12 and Saturday, Nov. 13. All performances start at 7 p.m. in the Hampton Center for Performing Arts at Henley High School, 8245 Highway 39. Tickets are available at the school’s front office and also at the door. Because of a limited number of seats, presale tickets are recommended. Cost is $5 for students and $7 for adults.
This is the Henley Drama Club’s first play in front of a live audience since February 2020.
“How to Host a Murder Mystery Dinner Party” follows the story of Penelope Chrysler-Michelin, an heiress with a fascination for murder mysteries. The story is set on an evening where Penelope is hosting a seminar on how to host a murder mystery dinner party. Through audience interaction she shares her advice for hosting such an event, including information on planning out all of the details and inviting the traditional cast of characters for a murder mystery. Like other works within the genre, her seminar includes surprise guests, plot twists, and ever-increasing inclement weather.
The ensemble cast is led by McKenna Tenney, Aria Sha, and CJ Banda. The play is being directed by Drama Club advisor Erin Haney, with the assistance of student director David Serrano, who is participating as a part of his senior project.
Tribes donate $500,000 to Chiloquin project
The Klamath Tribes has donated $500,000 to Chiloquin Junior/Senior High School’s track and field renovation project. The overall project includes a new turf infield and a track renovation. The infield (pictured above) should be completed by early winter; the track by early spring.
“We appreciate the Tribal Council’s ongoing support of our schools and communities,” said John Rademacher, chair of the Klamath County School District Board of Directors. “This generous donation will go far to make this facility a place of which the Chiloquin community can be proud.” The $500,000 will be used to upgrade the lighting, concessions, restrooms, and bleachers for the track and field facility. Brixner wins award for schoolyard habitat
Over the past three years, Brixner Junior High School teacher Kara Contreras and her ecology students have created an outdoor classroom that attracts pollinators, provides habitat for the endangered monarch butterfly, and last spring was home to fledgling barn owls. That classroom – called a Schoolyard Habitat – earned Brixner an Eco-Schools USA Bronze Award from the National Wildlife Federation for exceptional achievement in educating for sustainability. Chiloquin breaks ground for new schoolyard
A groundbreaking celebration on Oct. 26 that included ceremonial tossing of dirt with golden shovels kicked off construction of a $1.3 million project that will build a new outdoor space at Chiloquin Elementary School. Plans include a playground area, a covered outdoor basketball court, interpretative walking paths, and community garden spaces. The groundbreaking event was attended by Chiloquin Elementary School students, community supporters, and project donors. Don Gentry, chair of The Klamath Tribes, gave the blessing, drummers from the Warrior Society performed, and campaign leaders and key partners spoke of the long-lasting impact the project will have on the community and its families. Riding the bus
We have a big ask. We know students are excited to be back to school in person, but that excitement may be causing unsafe behavior while riding the school bus. In the past two months, drivers have reported students leaving their seats while the bus is moving, using inappropriate language and voice levels, and not respecting authority when asked to change their behaviors.
If your student rides a bus, please review the following bus safety rules with them:
- Promptly follow all directions from the bus driver
- Quickly find your seat and stay seated until it is your turn to exit to the bus
- Always remain seated while the bus is in motion.
- Talk quietly and use appropriate language
- Wear your mask over your mouth and nose when riding the bus (temporary rule under COVID-19 regulations)
Students who refuse to promptly obey the directions of the driver or refuse to follow the rules and regulations in KCSD policies may forfeit their privilege to ride on the buses.
We count on and appreciate your ongoing support. Thank you!
