CMIT North at the Prince George's Area Science Fair March 15, 2025 | A Celebration of STEM Curiosity & Commitment
CMIT North proudly participated in the Prince George’s Area Science Fair (PGASF) held on March 15, 2025. Students showed incredible dedication and preparation, with all six projects—three individual and three group entries—submitted after weeks of hard work, research, and refinement.
The day before the fair, our student scientists dropped off their boards and conducted final preparations, ready to showcase their creativity and critical thinking to a panel of expert judges.
Although CMIT North has been honored with awards in past years and recognized for excellence, this year’s competition followed a rigorous 4-week evaluation period, and ultimately, our STEM projects were not selected for awards. Many of the winning entries this year focused on medical-related topics, reflecting a shift in judging preferences.
While we may not have brought home awards this time, we are immensely proud of our students’ efforts, innovation, and resilience. Participating in PGASF is a valuable experience that strengthens research, presentation, and collaboration skills—hallmarks of our STEM program at CMIT North.
A huge thank you to our student participants, mentors, and families for their continued support and dedication to academic excellence!

Scouts of America in the House! - STEM Learning Beyond the Bell
CMIT North was thrilled to host a special visit from the Scouts of America during the lunch period, on March 14, 2025, offering students a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on learning and leadership exploration right in the heart of the school day. This enriching experience highlighted how STEM learning at CMIT isn’t just an afterschool activity—it’s built into lunch periods, schoolwide programs, and everything in between.
Two of our very own students—Darius Williams (Grade 11) and Ronan McKeil (Grade 10)—proudly represented Scouting at CMIT, showcasing their skills, values, and the impact of their experiences in Troop 450.
We were honored to welcome distinguished guests:
Lawson Lipsord-Cruz
Daryl Branson, District Executive of Prince George’s County
Scoutmaster Gerry Floyd Smith, Troop 450
Their presence and guidance gave students a firsthand look at how Scouting builds confidence, community, and lifelong skills—perfectly aligned with CMIT’s mission to empower future leaders through STEM and service.
At CMIT, learning knows no bounds. From lunch to leadership, STEM is always in session.
Culinary Club Weekly Highlights
Every Friday, the savory scents drifting through the halls signal one thing—Culinary Club is in session. Under the steady support of Ms. Christine Fermin, our Principal Secretary, and in partnership with Ms. Makina Hagans, a dedicated Prince George’s County employee, the club has blossomed into a vibrant and enriching space for students who are passionate about food and the art of cooking.
Each week, students roll up their sleeves and dive into hands-on culinary experiences that blend creativity, teamwork, and real-world kitchen skills. From learning how to properly dice vegetables to mastering recipes from diverse cultures, the Culinary Club is a hub of joyful learning and culinary exploration.
Ms. Hagans brings professional insight and guidance that enrich each session, offering students not only practical tips but also a sense of purpose and pride in their work. Whether preparing healthy snacks or baking from scratch, students are gaining lifelong skills—and having fun while doing it.
The Culinary Club is more than just a cooking group; it’s a community built around shared meals, mentorship, and discovery. Thanks to the dedication of Ms. Fermine and Ms. Hagans, our students are thriving—one dish at a time.
Green School Update: Growing a Greener CMIT
As a certified Maryland Green School, CMIT North remains committed to environmental awareness, sustainability, and hands-on eco-education. To maintain our certification and continue modeling environmental responsibility, students and staff are actively involved in composting efforts, recycling programs, and reducing our school's ecological footprint.
This spring, we're excited to expand our impact by reviving and rebuilding our school garden, starting April 7. This space will serve as a living classroom—supporting lessons in science, sustainability, and food awareness. We are currently seeking enthusiastic volunteers and student leaders who are passionate about the environment and ready to help bring our garden to life. Whether you have a green thumb or just a willingness to dig in, we welcome your support!

Bakers Den | Student-Led Club
For many students at CMIT North, Bakers Den is more than a club—it’s a weekly moment of joy, creativity, and connection. Guided by Ms. de Guzman, this student-led space invites members to explore the art of baking while building friendships and confidence along the way.
Students love the hands-on experience, the chance to express themselves through food, and the sense of community that comes with each shared recipe. Whether trying something new or perfecting a classic, Bakers Den offers a warm, welcoming environment where everyone belongs—and every bake has a story.
Stay tuned for bake sales and events where their passion will be served fresh!
DEPARTMENT UPDATES
SCIENCE
Nature Hike Bingo from Ms. de Guzman's Class
Ms. De Guzman’s class engaged in an interactive Nature Hike Bingo activity as an introduction to ecology, allowing students to explore biodiversity and ecological relationships firsthand. Using a bingo-style checklist, they identified various natural elements such as native plants, decomposers, animal traces, and evidence of symbiotic interactions. This hands-on experience reinforced key ecological concepts, including the flow of energy, the role of abiotic and biotic factors, and the importance of biodiversity in maintaining ecosystem balance. By making direct observations and discussing their findings, students developed a deeper appreciation for the environment and gained insight into the impact of human activities on local ecosystems.
Ice Cream Chemistry with Mr. Ozdem: A Hands-On Exploration of Phase Changes and Composition
As part of an engaging unit on physical and chemical changes, students in Mr. Ozdem’s chemistry class participated in a hands-on lab exploring the science behind ice cream making. Led by Mr. Ozdem, a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT), the activity reinforced key concepts from the curriculum, including phase transitions, freezing point depression, heat transfer, and the composition of mixtures and solutions.
Students analyzed how salt lowers the freezing point of ice, enabling the cream mixture to freeze, and discussed the roles of emulsifiers, stabilizers, and the molecular structure of dairy products. They also explored endothermic processes and the importance of controlled variables in experimental design.
This interactive lab not only deepened students' understanding of chemistry principles but also connected scientific theory to a real-world (and tasty!) application.
Thank you, Mr. Ozdem, for creating a memorable learning experience where science and curiosity come together—one scoop at a time!

The Counselor’s Corner
Supporting Public School Education
On Wednesday March 19th, we gathered in front of the school to advocate for a fully funded US Department of Education. We stand for our students, we stand for our teachers, and stand for our public schools and public charter schools.
Here is a message delivered from Mr. Conde:
We stand here today as both products and proponents of the greatest and most powerful nation in the world.
The question is, “What makes this nation powerful?”
Is it the wealthy people currently in the seat of power?
Is it the powerful people cowering in the shadow of the wealthy?
The question also is, “What makes this nation great?”
Is it the history of oppression and inequality?
Is it the denial of the many for the benefit of the few?
None of these answers accurately define what makes this nation the greatest and most powerful nation in the world.
This nation is great because of how it has treated “the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.
This nation is powerful because of the empowerment it provides to ALL through a Free and Appropriate Public Education.
What makes America standout from the rest of the world is that no matter your race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or social class, you are guaranteed access to a public education.
It is that great equalizer that has granted so many the opportunity of a better future, of open doors, of advancement beyond their wildest dreams.
What is at stake and what must we preserve?
We must preserve what makes this country great: our schools, our students, our teachers.
What will define this generation is how it has treated its most vulnerable population. Let’s protect the rights of the child with disabilities. Let’s provide access to higher education to the scholar who will not be able to go to college without scholarships or educational grants. Let’s provide a high quality education by maintaining talented, licensed, and caring educators in the classroom.
Let’s stand up for free public education for all!

🩺 Staying Healthy This Flu Season 🩺
As flu season is here, we want to remind our CMIT family of simple ways to stay healthy and prevent the spread of illness. Protect yourself and those around you with these essential tips:
✅ Get Your Flu Shot – The flu vaccine is the best way to reduce your risk.
✅ Wash Your Hands Frequently – Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
✅ Cover Coughs & Sneezes – Use a tissue or your elbow, not your hands.
✅ Stay Home if You're Sick – Rest and recover to prevent spreading germs.
✅ Boost Your Immune System – Eat healthy, stay hydrated, and get plenty of sleep.
If you have flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or body aches, please consult a healthcare provider and notify the school if your child needs to stay home.
