School Updates
Human Growth and Development (2-5)
Dear Families,
In June 2023, the Stoughton Area School District updated the curriculum guide for Human Growth and Development. Human Growth & Development is one part of the District's health curriculum. The vision of Human Growth & Development in SASD is to educate our youth with comprehensive, inclusive, medically accurate, and developmentally appropriate knowledge regarding their human growth and development, health, and wellness so they are empowered to make healthy decisions. Please click the links to find a full description of our Board-approved process and curriculum, including our Curriculum Guide and Progression of Topics by grade level.
Across the grade levels, topics include personal health, healthy relationships, human sexuality, injury prevention, safety, and social influences, prevention and control of infection, and access to medically accurate information. While topics are infused into the curriculum, we want to highlight the following learning outcomes and resources our 2nd-5th grade students will be engaged in this spring. As always, please feel free to contact me with questions and concerns.
- 2nd Grade: Week of May 19th
- 3rd Grade: Week of May 19th
- 4th Grade: Week of May 19th
- 5th Grade: Week of June 2nd
We also want to note that per Wisconsin Statute sec. 118.019, parents are allowed to exempt their child from instruction in human growth and development with a written request to the teacher or principal. This is referred to as an “opt-out” policy. Wisconsin Statute sec. 118.01(2)(d)2c permits pupils to be exempted from instruction on physiology and hygiene, STDs, symptoms of disease, and the proper care of the body if their parent shares a written request with the teacher or school principal. If you wish to opt out, please contact your child’s principal. Principals will provide families with an opt-out form upon request.

It can take up to 2 weeks for the approval. For more information about Background Checks please follow this link to the district web site. If you have submitted a background check form in the past and are not sure if you need to complete a new form, please send an email message to Ms. Plank and she can check for you.
