Magyar's Message Dec. 8, 2023
-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS families,
The holiday season is in full swing around our district!
You can feel the excitement in the air as we close out the last month of 2023.
Our Avon Lake High School Drama Club, under the direction of Patricia Frank, ushered in the holidays with several performances of “A Christmas Story The Musical” last week. The show was amazing, bravo! From acting, singing, set and costume design, music, and choreography, we have many talented students and directors in our district. Thank you for bringing this beloved movie classic to the stage and sharing your love of the arts.
It’s also a busy time of year for our district music departments as holiday concerts fill up the calendar. I have had the pleasure of attending many of these concerts and they are all spectacular. Thank you students, music teachers and directors for your hard work and dedication.
December 12 will be the last Board of Education meeting for member Ron Jantz. He has served on the Board since April 2007. Thank you Ron for your dedication, knowledge and leadership on the Avon Lake City Schools Board of Education. Thank you for always putting our students first. All four of the Jantz children are graduates of the Avon Lake City Schools. Together Shoremen, Forever Shoremen.
Congratulations to incoming Board of Education member Gail Soinski Opaskar, elected to the Board in November. Gail is a veteran educator and school administrator. We look forward to welcoming her to the Board in January.
Additional highlights from around our district include:
Learwood Middle School marked the 82nd Anniversary since the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii (Dec. 7) with its annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Ceremony. Eighth-grade student Lila Mueller shared a special reading during the ceremony. Her father (retired) served in the Armed Forces. The family moved to Avon Lake from Hawaii at the start of the school year. Members of the Avon Lake American Legion Post 211 were also in attendance for the 21-gun salute.
Troy students Sophia Zbawiony and Nicholas Golden are State Finalists in Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow contest (entered through Troy’s STEAM program). Their invention helps schools/communities eliminate food waste through compost. The students’ efforts have already earned the school $2,500 in Samsung Technology for the STEAM/STEM classroom.
Ella Grode became the first player in Shoregal soccer history to be named as a United Soccer Coaches Association All-American. Congratulations!
Congratulations to Eastview Elementary School on achieving the Ohio PBIS Bronze Award for 2022-2023. PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) focuses on encouraging positive student behavior, preventing negative behavior, and creating a more positive school climate.
Let’s finish 2023 off strong Shoremen and Shoregals!
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar
