Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 4th December 2020
Money money money!
Money and Work
Early Years
In the Early Years, children looked at different occupations and people who help us. They thought about their aspirations and wrote sentences about what they would like to be to earn their money.
Year 1
The children in Year 1 thought about their skills and strengths and how these can be used to help with jobs. The children then created a jigsaw puzzle with a picture of themselves ad their strengths on each piece. At the end of the day they thought about the best jobs that they might be suited for.
Year 2
In Year 2 children thought about their ideal jobs. They created pictures and descriptions of their favourite jobs before looking at the difference between wants and needs.
Year 3
In Year 3 children looked at different types of careers and challenged the stereotypes. Next the children thought about their dream jobs and the skills and knowledge that they would need to be successful in their chosen occupations.
Year 4
In Year 4 the children explored how they could spend money and the decisions that can be made with how money is used. They looked at ways that we can pay using cards and cheques and also thought about how a budget can be managed choosing to spend, save or donate.
Year 5
Year 5 learnt all about stereotypes and how we can have preconceived ideas about jobs and occupations. They explored their thoughts about roles and the potential career paths that they can choose.
Year 6
The children looked at a variety of job descriptions and how they can be constructed. They explored their aspirations and used the advice from a HR expert to create criteria lists for specific jobs.
Expert Advice!
The children in Year 5 and Year 6 also had a session about money from Mrs Barton Brown (mother of Josh in Year 5) who you may have seen last night on Martin Lewis's show with a perplexing dilemma about Christmas presents. If you haven't seen it, I do believe the show is available on catch up via the ITV Hub. She told the children about tax and wage slips and how pay can be calculated.
A HUGE THANK YOU to both parents for giving up their time and helping the children to understand about the importance of work and money.

School Update
This week we have started on our Nativity which will be different this year, but I am sure will still be uplifting and a very important part of the school's Christmas preparations. Nativity, A Message of Hope, will be released exclusively on the school's YouTube Channel on Thursday 17th December at 11am. Please do add it to your calendars!
Can I offer a huge thank you to parents and carers for their incredible generosity. The donations for the Friends' hampers was very impressive! Thank you for your continued support, I would encourage everyone to buy some raffle tickets to be in with a chance of winning one of the many fabulous prizes. (information below in the Friends' section of the newsletter)
Bad Weather
As we head into the winter months we do ask that children come to school suitably equipped for the weather. Please do ensure that all clothing is named so that we are able to return lost items.
In the event of bad weather the school always does its best to stay open, however it is worth being aware of the following:
- The decision regarding closure for bad weather needs to take account of local conditions as well as conditions in places that staff travel from as we need to ensure that suitable staffing is in place to open safely.
- The school will notify parents and carers about a school closure or late opening via the school's texting service. Please be aware that we will endeavour to update you as soon as possible, however it can take time to draw together intel about conditions from across the area.
- If it necessary to close the school during the day we will notify parents and carers by text.
- Please do avoid calling school to ask if we are open or closed as this can block communication channels.
- In the event of snow do send children with wellington boots, hats and gloves.
Christmas Cards and Gifts
As you know we are asking that Christmas cards are put into a box in classrooms so that they can be quarantined. The last day for cards to be brought in is Monday 14th December. We are also discouraging the giving of gifts due to the current situation. The most important gift this year, as many will agree, is a COVID free Christmas! Thank you for your understanding.
Thank you for your ongoing support
Kind regards
