Board Discusses Dual Language Program
On Tuesday, April 8, the Board of Education held its regular meeting during which Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education Dr. Gracie Gutierrez presented a new initiative: the launch of a Dual Language Immersion program in the District.
Starting in the upcoming school year, the District will pilot the Dual Language Immersion program at Yucca Valley Elementary School. This innovative educational model will be available to incoming Kindergarten students and is designed to promote bilingualism, biliteracy and cultural competency from an early age.
Under the program, Kindergarten students will receive instruction in both English and Spanish spending portions of the school day in each language. Over time, the program aims to build fluency and literacy in both languages while ensuring students meet academic benchmarks across all core subjects.
Dr. Gutierrez highlighted the long-term benefits of dual language education including enhanced cognitive development, improved academic outcomes and preparation for a multilingual, multicultural world.
Welcoming Ms. Yucca Valley
The Board was honored to welcome Miss Yucca Valley 2025, Audrey Grady, along with her court — First Princess Acacia Smith, Second Princess Alyssa Ramos, and Third Princess Sofia Gonzalez.
These impressive high school juniors dedicated five months to preparing for a program rooted in service, leadership and personal growth. The Miss Yucca Valley program, inspired by the motto “Service Above Self,” is designed to empower and prepare young women for their future.
Celebrating Classified Employees of the Year
Board representatives visited Lisa Soliz, librarian at TPHS, to congratulate her on being selected as San Bernardino County Office of Education's Classified Employees of the Year!
Students Soar at Flying Doctors
Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Amy Woods shared a recap of last month’s Flying Doctors free community clinic, held March 8–9 at Yucca Valley High School. The event provided critical health services to residents — with a powerful assist from the District’s own CTE students in medical, dental, pharmacy technician pathways and more.
Working alongside volunteer doctors and health professionals, students helped deliver a total of 503 services including vaccinations, dental cleanings, extractions, vision screenings, custom glasses and more.
This hands-on experience not only reinforced classroom learning but also exemplified the heart of the CTE program — preparing students to lead with skill, compassion and purpose.
Student representatives from TPHS and YVHS spoke at the Board meeting about recent updates and events at their school sites. Both sites are currently diving into spring sports with golf, softball, baseball, swimming, tennis, and track and field. YVHS is also prepping for an upcoming karaoke fundraiser!
