Your Vote is Magic
Master Illusionist Teaches Importance of Voting to Scituate High School Students
On October 17, Scituate High School welcomed author and master illusionist Lyn Dillies, who captivated students with her performance, “Your Vote is Magic.” This unique show served as a dynamic visual civics lesson, blending engaging magic
tricks with important educational content to inspire future voters. The event was made possible
by the generous support of the Scituate Lions Club.
“On behalf of Scituate High School, I would like to thank the Scituate Lions Club members for
helping us provide our students with this invaluable experience,” said SHS Principal Michael
Hassell. “This year’s election will be the first time that some of our students will be eligible to
vote and it’s crucial they learn how important engaging in this civic duty is.”
Dillies’ performance highlighted pivotal moments in voting history, including the Women’s
Suffrage Movement, video interviews of Veterans explaining what voting means to them, and
the 15th, 19th, and 26th Amendments and the Voting Rights Act. After each history segment
Dillies would perform a captivating magic trick that kept all eyes on her performance.
“Voting is the unparalleled freedom to steer our own course, and its price has been paid dearly
throughout our history,” said Dillies. “Many Americans have paid the ultimate sacrifice to
defend and preserve the right to vote – and we honor their memories when we exercise that
right.”
A 2022 survey by The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement
revealed that while three in four youth feel empowered to change the country, only two in five
feel qualified to participate in politics.
“We aim for every student at Scituate High School to feel well-equipped to engage in
elections,” Hassell added. “Our goal is to provide the skills and knowledge necessary for them
to approach the voting booth with confidence.”

Seniors!!
Attention Seniors and Parents/Guardians:
A reminder to start preparing for your next steps. Here's what you need to do:
FSA ID – If you haven’t already, make sure you create your FSA ID now. You’ll need this ID to complete your FAFSA and access federal student aid. Students and their contributors will need to complete the FSA ID. Learn more about contributors here.
FAFSA – The FAFSA opens on December 1, but don’t wait until the last minute! Get your FSA ID set up and gather the necessary documents so you're ready to apply as soon as it opens.
Don’t miss this important step for financial aid! Without an FSA ID, you won’t be able to complete your FAFSA, and without the FAFSA, you won’t be eligible for any federal grants or loans. You never know what you might qualify for! Having choices is key! For any questions, reach out to your school counselor or visit the College Planning Center for assistance.

Some schools, most recently URI, have added a self-reporting component to their admissions process. After the application is received by the institution, the student will be prompted to input the entirety of their academic record. The most efficient way to complete this task is to obtain a copy of your high school transcript to use as a reference. Mrs. Erickson or your guidance counselor can provide you with a copy of your transcript, should you need it.

Updated Resources for Distribution
The updated English and Spanish versions of the ACN Registration Guide and ACN Signup flyers have not yet been posted on RIDE’s ACN website, but we wanted to ensure that you had them. They’re attached to this email - please distribute widely to students and families.
Important Dates and Deadlines
- Spring 2025 semester: January 13 – May 16 with varied dates
- Pre-lottery registration runs through December 6, 2024.
- School approval deadline is December 9 at 12pm. Students with pending approvals after this deadline has passed will not be included in the course lotteries.
- Spring 2025 course lotteries run on December 10. Students are notified by email same day with a seat offer or waitlist number for each course they preregistered for.
- Seat offer deadline: Students have until January 2 at 11:59pm to accept or decline their seat offers before they expire. A course with an expired seat offer will not be available to them in their EnrollRI dashboards if they try to re-register post-lottery.
- Open enrollment runs from January 3 through the last day of the add drop period for each course. Courses with seat availability will be filled on a first come first serve basis as students register and move up the waitlist. Prompt approvals will help ensure a student secures a seat in a preregistered course during open enrollment.
ACN Team School Visits
The ACN team is available to do school visits to share ACN info and help students preregister for Spring 2025 courses. Please let us know if you’d like us to visit and we’ll be happy to schedule a time that works best for you and your students.
