Strive for 5!
Per Texas State Law, in order to receive credit for a course or grade level, a student must be in attendance 90% of the time. Absences whether excused or unexcused count towards the total.
But even more important than the law is that when your child misses school, they miss the amazing instruction that is happening and there's no way to ever truly make that up. Last year, our students missed a total of 3,320 days of instruction which equals 24,900 hours of awesome teaching that went unexperienced.
We want all of our students to be able to take advantage of as much great teaching as possible, so that's why this year we are encouraging all parents to "Strive for 5!" Strive for 5 or less missed days for your child this school year. Please do not misunderstand- if your child is sick, please, please, please keep them home. However, try to plan vacations around our school holidays so that your child can avoid missing as much instruction as possible.
Many parents don't realize that the vast majority of our funding from the state is directly tied to our daily attendance. Each student that is present each day equates to about $37 in funding. If a student is absent, that amount is lost. $37 may not seem like much, but it adds up quickly! When looking at last year's numbers, LVMS lost $122,840 in funding due to attendance. That funding could allow us to hire more teachers equating to smaller class sizes to benefit our students.
Again, if your child is sick, please keep them home. The last thing we want is for your child to be miserable here at school and to possibly cause another child to be sick. What we are trying to limit is avoidable absences.
Attendance Reminders
- The tardy bell rings at 8:40. Instruction begins immediately at this time.
- Official attendance is taken each day at 9:45. If your child is not physically present at that time, they are counted absent.
- All attendance notes should be given to your child's teacher or emailed to Terri Harkins at tharkins@lagovistaisd.net. Notes should be returned within 3 school days of the absence or appointment.
- Typically, the later in the school day you can schedule needed appointments, the better. You definitely want to avoid the 9:45 time frame if possible.

Lady Vikings Reach Halfway Point of Season!
The Lady Vikings have reached the halfway point of their season and played hosts to the Lady Badgers of Lampasas in what was just their 2nd home game of the season this past week.

These girls continue to impress me throughout the season. Though the results were not what we had hoped for, they did many good things throughout the competition against Lampasas Monday evening! I've started calling them “The Team of 3”. I feel like we have gone 3 sets every game! Which very much contradicts a saying Holt gives me for volleyball competitions! Ha! But I feel it is important to say they are getting sets!
They won the first set against Lampasas and stayed ahead through the second until about ½ way into it. They started to struggle on serve receive and Lampasas got about 10 in a row on us from their Libero. We couldn't recover and went into a 3rd set where they competed somewhat, but unfortunately, they were too much in their heads to come out on top.
Overall they played great volleyball! They passed, set and attacked numerous times! Their serves were more consistent and their communication was awesome! I give them a challenge at each competition and in this game it was - Who can get a backrow attack? If anyone could get one, I would buy them a Sonic drink! Congrats to Sienna Todd who proved it can be done! I don't know if she meant to, but she did it and we were all so proud of her and everyone cheered on the court when she did!
We consistently talk about improving for the long game and not the short game. We will not play scrap ball and consistently send it over on the first or second touch. They came together and showed great skill. We will continue to work on their mental game and overcoming mistakes. They are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the following years because of their efforts! A BIG thank you to the boys who came out and supported them! What a difference it was in that gym to have you all there! We very much appreciated it!

The Lady Vikings faced a tough match against Lampasas on Monday night, falling in two sets with scores of 11-25 and 13-25. Lampasas started strong, utilizing a powerful serve that put us on the back foot early on. Despite the loss, there were some promising highlights. Aubrey Alves contributed significantly, serving for 5 points. In the second set, Lauren Wood found her rhythm, delivering outside sets to Victoria Porras, which showcased our potential for an aggressive offense. Cori Davis stood out defensively, making multiple digs from the back row and even executing a back row attack. While it wasn’t the outcome we hoped for, the team demonstrated resilience and moments of strong play that we can build on in future matches.

The Lady Vikings were primed to bounce back at home vs Lampasas after a tough match in their 3rd road game last week. Bounce back they did as the girls played solid volleyball from the first serve characterized by persistent attacking from both the service line and the net paired up with a strong defense kept the Lady Badgers bottled up all night long. The Lady Vikings took total control from the outset, winning both sets by wide margins, 25-16 and 25-13 taking the match in commanding fashion. The win brings the Lady Vikings record to 6 - 2 on the season and 3 - 2 in district play. This group is still in the fight for the district crown and continues to work very hard getting better each day. The Lady Vikings will host Marble Falls next monday night, come on out and support these young ladies as they’re a fun group to watch!

The 8th grade B team played amazing volleyball on Monday night against Lampasas. They started the match off strong by winning the first set 25-12. After getting in a little bit of a hole in the second set, the Lady Vikings bounced back and finished strong but came up a little short (18-25) forcing the match to a 3rd set. The 3rd set started and there was no going back for us as Elena Prescott served the match away (10 serves in a row!) which clinched the victory with a score of 15-4. Great play was seen all around from serve receive, to defense, to aggressive attacks - even from the back row!
Vikings Split with Jarrell
The LVMS Football Vikings traveled to Jarrell on Thursday to take on the Cougars. In the Super B-team game, the Vikings fought hard and ended up in a 6-6 tie. The Vikings' Defense kept the Cougars slot-t in check, holding the Cougars to a single touchdown (late in the game). Joe Spence scored the Vikings' lone touchdown on a 25-yard pass from Camden Huey.
In the night's second contest, the 7th-grade Vikings fell to the Cougars 20-8. Offensively, the Vikings' lone score came on a 15-yard rush attempt by Tyler Tarlton and a Kooper Kudrna 2-point conversion. The Cougars' running back had an exceptional night, proving to be too much for the Vikings to handle. However, the Vikings did continue to improve throughout the game and grow as a team. The Vikings are growing and learning with each game they play. The 7th-grade Vikings are now 1-2 on the season and look to improve during the bye week.
In the night's final contest, the 8th grade Vikings were looking to stay undefeated on the season and remain atop the district standing. This was a VERY hard-fought contest on both sides. The Cougars and the Vikings were undefeated and wanted to stay undefeated. Both teams were very talented, and both played very well. In the end, the Vikings prevailed 13-12 over the Cougars thanks to a Lila Rose extra-point after the Vikings' second score of the night. Offensive scores were provided by Landon Jordan (40-yard reception from Easton Rice) and a 5-yard rush by Brody Norris. The Viking's Defense gave up 2 scores in the first half but tightened the bolts and shut the Cougars out in the second half. This game was a very tough challenge for the Vikings, and in the end, it was what they needed. They needed to experience some adversity and rise to the challenge.
The coaches are very proud of all the teams' efforts on Thursday and hope to see some bumps and bruises healed over the bye week.

Viking Excellence
The LVHS Environmental Science Club (AKA The Green Team) is a student led organization centered around finding ways to live more sustainably in our school, home, and community. They partner with community organizations, like Keep Lago Vista Beautiful (KLVB), and volunteer their time to help our community to spread environmental awareness.
Right now, their big project (started last spring and ending in January) is the Trex Recycling Challenge. Our Green Team is trying to collect 1000lbs of plastic bags and plastic film in order to earn a bench. Please click the link below to learn more.
Thank you, LVHS Green Team, for helping make the world a better place! And thank you to their amazing sponsor, Heather Koenning, for helping turn their passion into progress!

Strive for 5!
In addition to missed learning opportunities, many parents also may not realize that our school's funding from the State is directly tied to daily attendance. Each day your child is present, the school receives about $37. While $37 might not seem significant on its own, it adds up quickly. Last year, the District's funding was reduced by over $700,000 due to student absences. This loss of funds impacts our ability to hire more teachers, reduce class sizes, and further enhance the learning environment for all students.
We appreciate your help in reducing avoidable absences so that your child — and all of our students — can take full advantage of the excellent instruction we offer every day.

Vaping = DAEP
HB 114 makes offenses involving the possession and/or or use of vapes a mandatory DAEP offense. School districts will now be required to place all students who are caught in possession and/or or using vapes (of any kind – not just those with drugs) into their DAEP.
Please share this with your children - it's just not worth it!
