October is Filipino American History Month
Estimada comunidad,
I hope this communication finds you well and enjoying a well-deserved break.
This fall, we will celebrate our unique backgrounds and perspectives, which enrich our school culture and society. Together, we can continue to create a vibrant community where every child feels valued and empowered to thrive. Moreover, they see themselves in the school and classrooms.
October marks the beginning of Filipino American History month. I invite you to take a moment and access the resources provided to learn more about the importance of this month. As a diverse school community, I am happy to announce that we will celebrate the contributions of Filipino Americans to the richness of our society. During Apertura, students will read a short passage about such contributions and historical Filipino American Heroes. Every weekend, you will get additional resources in the Que Pasa communication. Si se Puede!
Isang Bagsak!
As a reminder, students are back tomorrow Wednesday October 2nd @ 8:30 AM.
Adelante Colibríes!
Filipino American History Month
For the first time in Adelante’s history, we are excited to celebrate Filipino American History Month! San Jose is home to a sizable Filipino population (over 53,000 people) and nearly 400 Alum Rock students and their families identify as Filipino.
Filipino American History Month (FAHM) is celebrated annually in October, commemorating the arrival of the first Filipinos in modern-day Morro Bay, California in the United States on October 18, 1587. Filipinos were the first documented Asian people to arrive in the United States and are the second-largest Asian-American community in the U.S., and are the third-largest racial group in California.
Following years of campaigning and advocacy by both the civil society and organizations, the Filipino American National Historical Society established Filipino American History Month in 1992. In 2009, Congress recognized the month of October officially as Filipino American History Month in the U.S.
The official theme of this year’s FAHM is Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience.
All month long, we will be sharing information highlighting information that speak to these themes, which are also related to our Adelante monthly value of Cooperation.
If you are interested in celebrating FAHM beyond our campus, please mark your calendars with thee upcoming local events:
Thursday - Paws To Share on Campus
