Cincinnati Schools Superintendent Visits SME Manufacturing Lab at Proviso West
During a recent visit to the SME Manufacturing Lab at Proviso West High School, Iranetta Wright, superintendent of the Cincinnati Public Schools, joined Dr. Alexander Brandon, District 209 Director of Career and Technical Education and Early College, and Proviso West advanced manufacturing teacher April Senase. They collaborated to bridge the gap between urban education and industry. Their focus was on integrating real-world experiences into the curriculum, helping students earn credentials and dual college credits, and preparing them for manufacturing careers.
This visit highlighted the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and industry partners. Ms. Wright emphasized how such partnerships empower students with essential workforce skills. Impressed by the dedication and innovation of students and faculty, she expressed her desire to witness urban students' success firsthand in a lab setting.
Dr. Brandon stressed the goal of showcasing diverse urban students' talents and potential in manufacturing. By fostering strong relationships between schools and local businesses, he believes students can be better prepared for future challenges. Savvas Education Consultant Co-Teaches at Proviso West
Nancy Christman, an Education Consultant at Savvas Learning Company, teamed up with Ms. Victoria Serritella, a teacher at Proviso East High School, on April 25, 2024. Together, they developed a lesson plan on figurative language from the myPerspectives textbook series, enriching the English 2 EL classroom's novel unit on "Parrots in the Oven." Students actively distinguished literal from figurative language, fostering language development and literacy skills.
During the session, students enthusiastically embraced figurative language, expressing its role in making text more engaging. Ms. Serritella's teaching approach, focused on meeting EL students' language needs, was demonstrated through meticulous lesson planning and continuous assessment of their speaking and listening skills.
Angela Marino, the District Coordinator for ELA and the Arts, highlighted the significance of Ms. Christman's classroom visits in extending the PLC work led by Dr. Anne Gottlieb. The collaboration facilitated by Ms. Christman and Ms. Serritella not only enriched students' understanding of literacy concepts but also laid the groundwork for future co-taught lessons.
