Road Trip Nation-Personal Testimonies about Career Pathways
The best career paths for your child will always start at the place where their interests meet their abilities. RoadTripNation helps them find that intersection! Have your child complete their brief interest survey and the results will take them to careers matching your child's personal career cluster. Each career listed has various leaders speaking to their personal journey to and in that career. This includes both videos and graphics describing their career journey roadmap.
Tip of the Month: College and Career Paths
Career Conversations
Aligning their High School Coursework with their Career Aspirations:
As your child is finalizing their course selections for next year, we encourage course selections that support their post secondary goals. Consider having conversations about who they see themselves as and how they see themselves in the professional world. Are they taking classes that match those goals and prepare them for that career path?
What are the skills necessary for their Career Aspirations:
When encouraging your child to explore occupations, it’s important to consider what soft skills and hard skills are required to be successful at that job.
- Hard skills help individuals carry out the technical and professional requirements of a job.
- Soft skills help individuals work well with others. These are often considered "power skills" that apply to all different careers. Such as: time management, responsibility, professionalism, eye contact, follow through, etc.
Help your child determine what training and education might be necessary for their possible careers. Will college be necessary and what level of degree is required; does the profession require on the job training in apprenticeships, require certifications or licensure; does the career start with employment and then advancement opportunities within the organization? How do these requirements influence your child's choices for a career fit?
What is Important to your Child in their World of Work:
Understand what is important to your child in their career and how they spend their time in the workforce. Have them explore how occupations differ in their work characteristics: the work setting, daily tasks, work schedule, compensation, interactions with colleagues, advancement opportunity, travel, variety of tasks, etc.
Conversations with Professionals in their Career Aspirations can support their Career Exploration: Consider helping your child set up an interview or job shadowing with a person in the field(s) they are interested in pursuing.

For SOPHOMORES
Your child has been through a year and a half of high school. Before long they will be taking their End of Course (EOC) exams for this year. It is important to realize that they will, most likely, be taking 4 of the EOC exams this year which is double what they had to do last year. I know that they take a lot of time and can create stress, but remember, what they are doing in class today and every day is preparing them for these tests.
Junior year students have so many more courses available to them to explore in their registration selections. They also no longer are assigned to an Academic Prep for a study period. Students who want a period off to study have the choice to select "Options" which will hold a space in a period of the day for them to have work time. They also can select "Late Arrival" or "Early Release" which places that Options period during either 1st or 8th period for the student to arrive late or leave early from school and do work from home instead.
DACC APPLICATION: Online Application here.
DACC offers career- based lab learning to students their junior and senior year.
