The Soaring Eagle News (Week 2)
Week 2 (9/2- 9/8)
Happy Fantastic Friday Eagle Families!!!
What another great week here at Alderman Elementary! We are so proud to see so many of our Eagles SOARing high. This week, many of our students have earned enough points in Class Dojo to start cashing out their rewards, which is a huge indicator that they are exemplifying what it means to SOAR as scholars, being optimistic, accountable, and respectful each day. Thank you for your continued support in helping them shine!
Areas of Focus:
As we continue to adjust and settle into the new school year, we have noticed a few areas that need attention to ensure a successful and smooth experience for everyone:
Prompt Arrival to School
The school day begins promptly at 7:40 a.m. If your child arrives at or after this time, they are considered tardy. In such cases, a parent or guardian must walk their child into the building and sign them in at the front desk. This procedure ensures that all students are accounted for and begin their day safely and prepared.
It is important for students to arrive on time each day. Being punctual not only maximizes their learning time but also helps them start their day positively and smoothly, setting a tone for success. Consistent tardiness can lead to missed instructional time, which impacts a student's ability to keep up with their classmates and fully engage with the day's lessons. We understand that occasional delays may happen, but we encourage you to plan accordingly to help your child arrive at school on time. Your support in fostering good habits of punctuality is greatly appreciated.
Car Rider Car Tags
Please be sure to have your car tag displayed upon arrival to pick up your child. This system helps us to ensure your child is riding home with someone who is approved to transport them and speeds up our car rider line. If you don’t have your tag, we will have to ask for identification before we can allow your student to ride in the vehicle.
This year, we have worked hard to help move the car rider line along faster, and we have been able to get all car riders picked up by 2:50 p.m. each day. This can only happen when everyone does their part. So, help us help you keep your child safe and get through the pickup line as quickly as possible!
Have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to seeing our Eagles SOAR even higher next week!
Parent Tip: Celebrate Your Child
Be sure to celebrate your child this week as it reinforces the desired behaviors but be mindful of the common misuse of praise, such as saying "Good job!" to children, and how it can actually hinder their development. This type of vague praise is described as "lazy" because it does not provide children with specific feedback on what they did well, nor does it encourage them to focus on the process that led to their success. Research by Claudia Mueller and Carol Dweck shows that praising children for their intelligence or abilities can lead to a fear of failure, reduced persistence, and lower enjoyment in learning. Instead, children benefit more from praise that focuses on their effort, strategy, and attitude, as this fosters a growth mindset and helps them build resilience and a sense of control over their achievements.
As you celebrate your child shift the approach to praise by being more specific and process-oriented. Instead of general statements like "Good job," highlight what the child did well, such as "You worked really hard on that project" or "You stayed focused during the whole game." You can also use questions to help your child reflect on their efforts, like asking, "What did you enjoy most about what you did?" This helps children internalize their achievements and develop self-reliance, rather than becoming dependent on external validation. Reducing empty praise and providing meaningful feedback can help children develop confidence and a sense of competence based on their own actions and efforts.

Volunteer Information
All volunteers, both Levels 1 and 2, must complete volunteer training each school year.
We love our volunteers! Whether you want to assist in a classroom, lead a small group, attend a field trip, or simply help in an area around the school, we need you to complete the application process to ensure you are either a Level 1 or Level 2 volunteer!
Our Level I volunteers work under the continual supervision of school staff. If willing to serve our school as a Level I Volunteer, you will need to complete the following steps:
- Read all of the information in this presentation, Volunteer Orientation, and the NHCS Volunteer Handbook (we will get this to you as soon as it becomes available).
- Complete the Volunteer Orientation Assessment with a score of 80% or higher.
After completing Level I certification and if you are willing to complete Level II requirements, please complete a Background Check Application. Background checks cost $22.50 and are valid for three (3) years. Our Level 2 Volunteers may work alone with students and may not always be with a staff member.
General Guidelines after receiving district clearance to serve as a volunteer:
- Please have your photo ID ready when coming to campus to either sign in.
- When volunteering, please respect the instructional day and stay within your volunteer area.
