Monte Vista 2024: July 29-August 11th
Principals' Monthly Message
Here's to an amazing 24-25 school year ahead! We welcome back all of our past families and our new families whom we can't wait to weave into the blue jay family nest!
‘Incite Excellence. Inspire Change.’
Our Superintendent echoes our sentiments when sharing that, "We (MPUSD...and Monte Vista TK-8) are committed to excellence and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and adaptability. Through our collective actions we seek to inspire positive changes for our students, families, teachers, staff, and community. The MPUSD team is fully prepared to engage students with outstanding teaching and learning, equipping them with the necessary tools and strategies to succeed and achieve their aspirations."
We would like to conclude with some sentiments that were recently shared with our first promoting 8th grade class and their families in May 2024, which captures our decade-long journey and gratitude to become the school we are today and still aspire and inspire to be as we make progress towards excellence.
What an amazing journey it has been for our blue jay scholars...This school has wonderfully evolved over the last nine years... Our school site has undergone an ongoing multi-stakeholder process for revising our school model. Parents, school and district level staff, students, and community members have helped us recognize and build upon the many components that made Monte Vista what it is while also inspiring us to expand, enrich, and aspire to even greater heights. All of you here embody and have contributed to that journey of expanding to greater heights and having a model that is nothing short of a beautiful mosaic or tapestry of rich works and voices. Our school represents a diverse community as well as the unique fusion of STEAM and Whole Child models with student inquiry-based learning and real world connections at the heart of it. Our pillars of community connection, discovery learning, rigorous engagement, and supportive culture continue to grow, evolve, and polish, and it is thanks to all of your efforts and dedication throughout the years that we have been able to build such a model. There is nothing I want more than for all of your children to soar to greater heights and carry with them this model as it is now a part of their identity to make a productive and positive, impactful difference in their lives and in the lives of others in high school and beyond. The sky is not your limit. There are no limits to what we as blue jays can achieve. A blue jay can always soar higher!
Jay jay, chirp chirp to the 24'-25' school year!
Weekly Recap- July 31-August 4th
We started this last week with a very fun MPUSD kickoff at Martin Luther King Jr. School of the Arts! It was great to meet so many new and returning Monte Vista families.
Meanwhile, construction on our campus made much progress.
Here are some highlights:
1) The multi-purpose room is nearly done with new ceilings and lights
2) Reconstructed newer ADA walkways in some of the wings
3) A new single stall cafeteria bathroom
4) More outlets and better lighting in many classrooms
5) Groundbreaking for a new A wing bathroom unit that will be completed before January 2025
6) Reconstructed parking lot with some more parking spots and a longer cafeteria carpool circle that extends out into the front of school just left of the front office
7) A new electronic announcement board upon entrance to school
8) And a big thank you to our PTO who did an amazing redesign of the staff lounge--unbelievable.
Announcements
1) TK and Kinder Soft Start update:
--> A special email went out a week ago about important additional information regarding soft start for TK and Kindergarten districtwide, including Monte Vista, from August 7th-August 16th. The email sent can be found HERE. A district video about the soft start can also be found HERE. In addition, the poll taken for non-ELO/ASCA aftercare needs on those days for TK and Kinder students from 12:50PM-2:25PM applies for August 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 15th, and 16th, since August 7th and 14th are Wednesdays and dismissal for all students on those days are 12:50PM. The 2:25PM pick-up for the non- ASCA/ELO TK and Kinder students on the above 6 dates will be at the upper carpool circle outside the cafeteria. If you have any more questions, please text Dr. Ashby at 831-901-7109.
--> TK/K Family Interviews During the Soft Start (similar to Back to School Connections for Grades 1-8 in late August/early September):
A neat feature of the soft start is the family/teacher interviews, which will be taking place during the 8-day observational period. These interviews will give you the opportunity to share about your hopes for the year and help us get to know your child better. If you haven't already received a phone call to schedule a parent interview in the afternoon during the TK/K Observational Period, you will be able to do so at our TK/K Meet & Greet on Monday, August 5th from 2:00pm-2:45pm. Interviews will take place from August 7th through August 15th. We will be taking groups of 5 families at a time from 1:00 pm, 1:30 pm and 2:00 pm. You can also reach out to Mrs. Larson at llarson@mpusd.k12.ca.us to set up a time to engage in the parent teacher interviews.
2) Our annual Meet and Greet events will take place on Monday, August 5th, from 2PM-2:45PM for grades TK and Kinder and on Tuesday, August 6th, from 2:30PM-3:15PM* for grades first through 8th. This is an opportunity for students to find out who their teacher(s) will be for the 23-24 school year and to meet our Monte Vista teachers, administrators, and some classified support staff members as well. You will also get to locate your scholar's classroom and tour the campus. Teachers will be greeting their future students (and their families) outside their classroom doors. Even when the classroom teacher visitation window ends, our families may continue to finish touring the campus and also mingle with administrators and some support staff (as well as PTO board members) in the courtyard/commons area next to the Multi-Purpose room. Looking forward to seeing you there!
3) Our grades 6-8 Student/Family Orientation will take place on Tuesday, August 6th at 3:15PM---directly following the Meet and Greet event and will be held in the cafeteria/MPR. This family engagement event will be an in person venue to answer questions and seek input from our grades 6-8 students and their families as we embark on this exciting new school year! Please know that if you are unable to attend, we will be sharing all relevant information via Parent Square, too. Parent Square message can be found HERE.
4) School begins on Wednesday, August 7th, at 8:00AM and dismissal is at 12:50PM. Please reference the following links for specific information regarding drop off and pick up procedures. Please note that Grades TK-3 will be dropped off at middle carpool circle while grades 4-8 at bottom basketball courts parking lot (parents of siblings can choose one of the drop-offs for both children). Remember, cars need to enter via Walter Colton and exit out Toda Vista. Finally, there will not be a schoolwide community meeting the first day of school (i.e. just focusing on getting students familiar with path to class). Morning community meetings will be the following for different grade levels:
Mondays and Fridays- grades 1-5 (bottom basketball courts) + TK and Kinder add in on Fridays
Tuesdays - grade 6 (multi-purpose room)
Thursdays- grade 7 (multi-purpose room)
Wednesdays- grade 8 (multi-purpose room)
Please reference this parent square message for the new drop-off/pick-up zones. Map further below as well. Also, more detailed information around dropoff and pickup procedures can be found just below.

Unless your child is coming for breakfast (which now starts at 7:30AM for non-ASCA students), please do not drop off your child before 7:40AM. Early morning care for ASCA students will be available starting at 7:15AM in the multi-purpose room.
5) Some families have requested buying some of their own classroom supplies before the school year starts. Please keep in mind that our site and our teachers will have some school supplies in place for their students on the first day of school. However, anything parents buy from the optional school supply list will be additionally helpful. If you are buying extra supplies for your own child, the optional supply list we offer will help you buy things that are in line with items each grade level team prefers and desires to use in their classrooms. You can access classroom supply lists by grade level HERE.
6) Please join us for a Principals' Breakfast on the first day of school on August 7th! We will be hosting this event in our multi-purpose room from the window period of 8:10am-8:30am. This will be an opportunity to mingle, ask questions, and connect as a community. A light breakfast will also be provided. Some members from our PTO board will also be present to share information and get to know you better.
7) Online registration and first day packet paperwork has now gone digital for new and returning students! See link here. MPUSD Online Registration. We need all returning students' families to complete this annual first day packet paperwork online preferably before school starts. We will also have a booth for it at our Meet and Greet too on August 6th and during the Principals' Breakfast (first day of school) on August 7th. It would be amazing if we were 100% by the end of the first full week of school! Go blue jays!
For those families who may need support in completing the online registration, Amanda Zaballos (stepping in for Berenice Hernandez's maternity leave) or Anahi Gamboa, Monte Vista attendance clerk and school secretary respectively, can address any questions at this time. 831-392-3890, azaballos@mpusd.k12.ca.us or agamboa@mpusd.k12.ca.us.
8) Willy Wonka's factory has closed. Thank you to all who made it! But, we also have Wizard of Oz opening at Pac Rep, Outdoor Forest Theatre in Carmel, the weekend of August 8th and closing the weekend of September 22nd. We have several Monte Vista students in this production. Below is the link to order tickets if you desire.
